Despite winning 9 Grammys – and competing for another this year – the singer had never performed at music’s biggest awards show.
The Grammys are starting to announce their musical attractions for the 2024 edition. The most talked about among them was Joni Mitchell, confirmed on Sunday 28th.
At 80, the singer and instrumentalist, one of the symbols of popular music, will perform for the first time at the awards ceremony. After being diagnosed with an aneurysm in 2015, which took her off stage and affected the way she speaks, Joni Mitchell returned to performing live in 2022, in a surprise show that spawned the ‘album Joni Mitchell in Newport. The work competes for best folk album at this year’s Grammys.
With the confirmation, the Grammy pays another tribute in life to one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, who was able to poetically express the desires of the hippie and countercultural generation, as well as being revered by jazz names such as Herbie Hancock. In 2002 she won a lifetime achievement statuette.
Owner of hits like Now both sides, A case of yours, California, Woodstock AND river, Joni Mitchell is also revered by current generation singers such as Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus AND Olivia Rodrigo.
Last year, the singer played a show in Washington and, struck by the number of cell phones lit up in front of her – a very different image from what she had seen at the legendary festivals of the ’60s – Joni declared: “Guys , you look like a falling constellation!” .
Complex relationship with industry
The singer is known for her critical stance towards the music industry. In 1995, after receiving the Grammy for Best Pop Album with the disc Turbulent indigo – which proved the permanence of her relevance in music – she complained about some of the music media reducing her to the label of “60s folk singer?”. She joked at the time: “I’ve won three Grammys in the last ten years. Doesn’t that make me a ’90s singer?”
In 2021 he sparked controversy when he removed his albums from Spotify, in protest the spread of false information about Covid carried out in a far-right podcast hosted on the platform.
Grammys 2024
In addition to Mitchell, the Grammys also confirmed performances by U2, SZA, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Travis Scott AND Olivia Rodrigo, among other attractions. This year, women dominate the main categories, as is the case with SZA (9 nominations) e Taylor Swift (5).
The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 4 February, starting at 9.30 pm. In Brazil it will be broadcast on TNT and HBO Max.
