The singer’s rights holders have filed a lawsuit against the rapper for sampling “I Feel Love” on the new album without asking permission
Disco icon Donna Summer’s estate filed a lawsuit against Kanye West, also known as Ye, this Tuesday (2/27). He is being sued for incorporating the 1977 summer hit “I Feel Love” into his new album without permission.
The lawsuit claims that Kanye and rapper Ty Dolla $ign used “instantly recognizable” parts of Summer’s song in “Good (Don’t Die),” a track from the “Vultures 1” album. This came even after Summer had explicitly rejected the request to use parts of the song.
The lawsuit claims that the heirs of the singer, who died in 2012, considered not only the immense commercial value of composing “I Feel Love” but also the possible degradation of Summer’s legacy. “West is known as a controversial public figure whose conduct has led several brands and business partners to disassociate themselves from him.”
Previous controversies
Kanye West, who decided to change his name to Ye in 2021, has been sparking outrage since 2022 for a series of anti-Semitic posts on social media. The rapper apologized for his comments in December.
He released “Vultures 1” on February 10, and the album is currently the best-selling album in the United States, according to Billboard.
In addition to Donna Summer, the album also uses a backing track from Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”, which led Ozzy Osbourne to insult the rapper on social media. “Kayne West (sic) requested permission to sample an excerpt from the 1983 live performance of ‘War Pig’ (sic) at the US Festival without vocals and was refused permission because it is anti-Semitic and has caused untold suffering to many. He went and used the sample anyway,” complained the singer, who added: “I don’t want any association with this man!”
