Gal Costa’s son asks for his mother’s body to be exhumed; The lawyer denies investigations into the cause of death

Gabriel Costa’s goal is to bring the singer’s body to Rio de Janeiro, where she would have liked to be buried

Gabriel Costa, only son of Gal Costa (1945-2022), submitted a request for the exhumation of the singer’s body. The information was disseminated by journalist Mônica Bergamo, of the newspaper Newspaperthis Wednesday 13th and confirmed at Estadao by one of Gabriel’s lawyers, Luci Vieira Nunes. Gal died in November 2022, aged 77.

According to Luci, Gabriel’s request aims to bring the remains of Gal, who was buried in São Paulo, to the São João Batista cemetery, in Rio de Janeiro, in a perpetual grave purchased by the singer in the 1990s. , Mariah Costa, Gal’s mother, who died February 1993, is buried.

The decision to bury Gal in Sao Paulo, the city where he lived the last years of his life, came from businesswoman Wilma Petrillo, who claims to be the singer’s widow. According to friends close to the singer, Gal has always expressed the desire to be buried next to her mother. However, she did not leave this wish in writing. OR Estadao He sought Wilma’s defense, but received no response. The space remains open.

Luci denies that the exhumation requested by Gabriel serves to investigate her mother’s death. According to her death certificate, Gal died of an acute myocardial infarction and a malignant tumor (cancer) in her head and neck. At the moment Gal’s body has not been subjected to an autopsy.

“It is not Gabriel who must investigate the causes of death. It is up to the Court, if it believes there are reasons, to carry out this investigation with the Public Prosecutor. This is not a direct request from Gabriel. He wants exhumation and transfer to Rio de January “, says Luci.

Gabriel Costa also disputes the businesswoman’s right to inheritance

When Gal Costa died, Gabriel, adopted by the singer in 2007, was 17 years old. According to his defense, because he was a minor, he could not take the lead in decisions about his mother’s burial.

Gabriel, at the time, lived with Gal and Wilma Petrillo, his godmother, in a house in Jardins, an elegant neighborhood in the capital of São Paulo. Currently, according to his defense, he no longer lives in the house, which belongs exclusively to Gal.

“It’s his house. His mother’s. He left because he couldn’t stand Wilma’s moral and physical harassment. She wanted Gabriel to take on debts. She has debts and then she wants him to share them with her,” says Luci.

The lawyer refers to a recently released audio in which Gabriel refuses to sign a document acknowledging the debt with the record company Biscoito Fino, which would have made an advance on the copyrights belonging to Gal.

“There can be no advance. All the money must go into inventory. No one can receive it. Wilma asked for this money under Gabriel’s name,” says the lawyer.

In September 2023 Wilma Petrillo is named inventor of the assets left by Gal Costa, but Gabriel asks the court that Wilma be removed from the position.

Wilma also asked for the right to inheritance, as she claims she has been in a relationship with Gal since the late 1990s, when they met. Until Gal’s death, Wilma acted as the singer’s manager and was a constant figure in her shows, recordings and interviews.

Gabriel, however, questions the existence of a stable union between the two and asks that Wilma not have the right to the singer’s inheritance.

Before adopting Gabriel, Gal, who had never been legally married, had made a will in which she expressed her desire to leave her assets to the Gal Costa Foundation, which existed only on paper. After the adoption, according to Luci, this document was revoked. At that time, the lawyer was Gal’s lawyer.
