Madonna is named honorary citizen of Rio de Janeiro

The singer will receive a tribute, making her an official Carioca, during a show in Copacabana on May 4

The City Council of Rio de Janeiro has approved a decree conferring the title of honorary citizen of Rio to the singer Madonna. The tribute, proposed by councilors Cesar Maia and Carlo Caiado (both from the PSD), was approved unanimously and will be delivered to the artist during her performance on Copacabana beach on May 4th.

Recognition for the Queen of Pop

“Madonna is the most successful female artist of all time,” the councilors justified in their project. “This title adds to the spectacular biography of the artist, who chose our Wonderful City to stage the only presentation in South America of her exhibition celebrating 40 years of her career.”

The title’s approval is seen as recognition of Madonna’s importance to pop culture and Rio de Janeiro. The singer, who has performed on other occasions in the city, has always shown great admiration for Rio’s culture.

According to Rio’s tourism secretary, Daniela Maia, the mayor Eduardo Paes will personally present the title to the artist. “I have already spoken to Eduardo Paes and he will personally give her the title. Madonna will become a native of Rio,” she told the press.
