The singer’s show projected images of Brazilian artists and activists during a celebration of the country to the sound of “Music”
At the grand finale of “The Celebration Tour,” held on the sands of Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night (4/5), Madonna performed a series of special tributes. During the presentation, which marked the artist’s 40-year career, Brazilian personalities were honored through projections on a huge screen, while the singer and Pabllo Vittar danced to the rhythm of “Musica”. Among the honorees were names such as Gilberto Gil, Paulo Freire, Cacique Raoni, Abdias do Nascimento, Marielle Franco, Marina Silva and Erika Hilton – among many others.
Emotional reactions
The reactions to the tributes were not long in coming. Marina Silva, current Minister of the Environment, expressed her gratitude through social media: “Very honored to have been remembered at Madonna’s show together with Brazilians of immense value, artistic, political and social contribution to our country. Thank you very much, Madonna!” she declared.
Anielle Franco, minister for racial equality and sister of Marielle Franco, who was murdered in 2018, posted a tribute to her sister, whose photo was displayed alongside Sinéad O’Connor during the show, commenting: “This moment.”
The team of Gilberto Gil, who was also Minister of Culture in the first Lula government, wrote in English: “Music unites people. Music mixes bourgeoisie and rebels. Madonna and Pabllo Vittar.”
Federal MP Erika Hilton also expressed her gratitude. “What a thrill and joy to be together with so many figures, in this historic moment of 40 years of career of the queen of world pop, right in the part of the show in honor of Brazil”, she wrote on social media.
Erika, who was in the audience at the show, was thrilled when she appeared on the screen. “Now I’m on Madonna’s screen. There are victories after victories. Black women and transvestites at the top,” she said, also in Copacabana, for Quem magazine. “When I found out that I would be among the names honored by Madonna, I thought ‘oh, my God’. I kept remembering when I was just a little country girl, with a very troubled life and history. I looked and I enjoyed consuming Madonna. Suddenly I became an important person on stage, on the queen’s screen. It’s truly a victory moment in life,” said the MP, who this year became the first trans person to lead a bench . National Congress.
