Fear of Cancellation? Flora Matos speaks out after causing controversy over floods in the south

Singer Flora Matos caused outrage on social media when she commented on the floods that devastated Rio Grande do Sul, resulting in 90 deaths. In a post on the old Twitter, she praised the solidarity shown by several personalities, but made a controversial observation. “It’s great to see the population coming together to help in RS. Inside and outside Brazil, mobilization. I hope this serves as an inspiration and that it happens when other states experience catastrophes of this type. You know,” she said.

However, when asked by a follower about how she was helping the people of Rio Grande do Sul, Flora responded cryptically: “Being non-white”. This statement sparked criticism, with many users pointing out that the tragedy should not be politicized or racialized. Flora tried to defend herself, asking where the mistake was in wanting the mobilization seen in RS to inspire similar actions in other states in the event of natural disasters.

In another post, Flora mistakenly associated the tragedy in RS with the situation of indigenous peoples in Brazil, which also generated more criticism. Faced with the negative repercussion, the singer joked that she feels prevented from taking a stand against the injustices she suffers, questioning racism or defending equality, as she would be accused of seeking validation or provoking hatred.

Flora Matos’ reaction to the criticism was to ask that the hatred thrown against her be transformed into a cure. However, the singer’s stance generated more controversy and criticism, leading many to question her statements and positions.
