The musician and composer Daniele Gonzaga will release the album this Friday (17th). Masteries, in which he brings together collaborations with big names in Brazilian music from the northeast. The release of the album will be celebrated on the same day, starting at 10pm, with a concert Daniel with your band inside Ema’s cornerin Sao Paulo.
Born and raised in Rio de Janeirostill a boy, Daniele Gonzaga he took a trip that would change his life forever. He was just seven years old when he met Exú (PE), at the foot of Serra do Araripeand he saw a world of sound materialize in the landscape that would never abandon him.
“I have Exú tattooed on my arm. I go as much as I can and I have many friends there. I grew up on milk and pears in Tijuca (a neighborhood in Rio), so when I went for the first time everything changed in my life. hinterland, the smell, the discomforts, the way of seeing things… And Exú is no exception to this rule. It’s a city that I really like, it’s where I saw that there were other types of music.”says the singer and composer of 49 years old.
In a certain sense, it is this baggage of a lifelong journey, in which the hinterland is an obligatory route, that he now tries to show in the Maestrias album, like a traveling salesman arriving with a suitcase full of precious things. “The album is the result of learning from a journey through a Brazil that perhaps no longer exists. It deals with north-eastern matrices. Of masters… The intention is to establish an anthropological dialogue on what is happening in this universe of forró and the music of the northeast as a whole. The arrival of young people, the change in the perception of Brazilian cultures and of the country itself…”elaborates the artist.
To carry out this project, Daniel they have created a real curation of names who have legitimacy to support the concept of the album (the masteries), and who participate in the compositions, singing and playing. Both best-known names and Fagner AND Zeca Baleiroas for rarer royalties, such as Anastasia AND Violated Quintet.
There are also traditional masters that only more specialized ears would be able to recognise, such as Nando Cordel AND Xico Bezerraand also new talents who promise to carry this story forward, like Natasha Falcaoindicated at Latin Grammys 2023 in the category Revelationand the flutist Gabriele Rezendehis twelve-year-old godson, who gives the first note to the album, in Time that stoppedin which he also participates Cezzinasinger and accordionist Recife (FOOT). “The idea is to bring a scene to the forefront. This album isn’t about me, it’s about them”explains Daniel.
She is the queen of forró, however, the most present companion in the work. With AnastasiaDaniele composed four From 13 songs on the album, and that’s only a third of what they’ve already created together. In the album, in addition to the compositions, she also sings with Daniel A cuddle just like yours together with another member of the Forró royal family, a native of Paraíba Flavio José. “I became close to Anastácia when I started dating Carolina (Albuquerque, Anastácia’s niece and producer of the album), and I came to São Paulo. But I was a bit like that, because Anastácia was always talked about a lot at home, because a grandfather friend of mine (Luiz Gonzaga), but she didn’t have much contact with me. When I started sending her some things I wrote, she was a bit dry (laughs). says the musician.
Another participation that deeply touches Daniel’s feelings was that of Violated QuintetRecife group created in the 70s, with which he recorded Cowboysa singing aboio made under the spell of a traditional cowboy mass, in Serrita (FOOT). “When we talk about the Northeast, in music, the first thing that comes to mind are those violas of the Quinteto Violado. I made the music, I sent it and they accepted. When I received it it was that impact. .. never in my life as a boy would I have imagined that Quinteto Violado would record, with their sound, one of my songs!” he recalls, saying the emotion left him in tears.
Perhaps hence the idea of releasing the entire album at once, instead of releasing singles first, as often happens in today’s music market. “When I make an album, I love the concepts, I grew up listening to Pink Floyd, Quinteto Violado, they are mental journeys. The album has a concept, a dynamic. The album has an impact in this way”, explains Daniel, who also signs the production of the work. Now, the idea is to try to record a show with all the artists together and also release it vinyl format.
