Interview | Reddy Allor, country drag queen, reveals behind-the-scenes rejection and prejudice, provides details of new album

Since the late last decade, the music industry has closely watched the rise of a subgenre of country music led by LGBTQIAPN+ people who, tired of the heteronormativity and conservatism of the mainstream, They started a movement to sing about community experiences without abandoning their love of country music. This scene was called Queernejo and one of the highlights is the drag queen Reddy Allor.

Long before taking on the role of Reddy, Guilherme Bernardes Duarte, from São Paulo, was already singing country music. As a teenager, he formed a duo with his brother Gabriel, who today pursues a solo career as Gah Bernardes. Despite the growing success of his work, the artist had to deal with uncomfortable situations behind the scenes, which gradually pushed him away from the scene.

“I have always loved singing, being an artist and sharing moments of evolution with my brother, the stage is magical for me. Behind the scenes it was always a place that didn’t suit me, I didn’t identify with the people, with the subjects and I felt excluded precisely because it had no connection with those experiences. After speaking openly about my sexuality, the situation got worse, always hearing jokes and useless comments about my appearance, clothes and everything that was not heteronormative.“, he says.
