Rapper Brenda Biya declares her love in a country that criminalises homosexuality
Brenda Biya, daughter of Cameroon President Paul Biya, has publicly admitted her relationship with Brazilian model Layyons Valença in an Instagram post. The rapper known as King Nasty shared a photo of himself giving his lover a kiss and declaring his love.

Political and social context
Paul Biya, Brenda’s father, has been in power in Cameroon since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, behind only Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea.
The detail is that homosexuality has been criminalized in Cameroon since 1972, with penalties of up to five years in prison and fines, which makes Brenda’s public statement even more significant.
Layyons Valença lives in Switzerland and recently gained notoriety as “the Brazilian with the most controversial eyes in the world,” as she describes herself on Instagram, due to keratopigmentation, a procedure that changed the color of her eyes from brown to blue.
