‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Star Shannen Doherty Dies at 53

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of actress Shannen Doherty, an icon of an entire generation. Known for her unmistakable beauty and charm on screen, Shannen marked an era by playing the student in the high school drama “Beverly Hills, 90210” (which in Brazil became known as “Beverly Hills, 90210”), one of the biggest stars of the 1990s. Doherty passed away this Saturday, after bravely battling breast cancer for several years.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of battling the disease,” Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane said. Shannen was 53.

Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, but went into remission two years later. Unfortunately, that respite didn’t last. In February 2020, court documents in a lawsuit Doherty filed against her insurance company over damages to her home revealed that she was “dying” from stage 4 breast cancer that had metastasized to the point where it was incurable.

“It’s a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways,” Doherty told “Good Morning America” at the time. “There are days when I say, ‘Why me?’ And then I think, ‘Well, why not me? Who else deserves this?’ None of us do.”

In June 2023, she shared an emotional Instagram post revealing that her cancer had spread to her brain earlier in the year. “On January 5th, my CT scan showed metastases in my brain,” Doherty captioned a video of her receiving radiation.

Shannen Doherty, with her unforgettable performance and admirable strength, leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of all who admired her. She will forever be remembered as an icon whose light shone brightly in our lives.
