Beatles: Shakespeare inspired ‘Let It Be,’ reveals Paul McCartney

Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, and dream of mother influenced Paul McCartney’s composition in Let It Be

Paul McCartney revealed unusual inspirations for the Beatles’ hit “Let It Be.” According to the bassist of the band from Liverpool, England, pieces from the countryman William Shakespeare helped creation of song verses.

As explained in the book The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present (2021) (via CheatSheet), McCartney he studied Hamlet (1603) in high school, and some dialogue followed him into adulthood.

“I remembered this recently. While studying literature in high school with my favorite teacher, Alan DurbandI read Hamlet. At that time, I had to memorize the lines to quote on tests,” she explained.

Paul mentioned example with the track name itself: “‘O, I could tell you — But let it be. Horatio, I am dead.‘ I suspect these lines have implanted themselves in my memory unconsciously.”

Bassist’s dream of late mother, Mary McCartney, also influenced composition. “In the dream, I saw my beautiful mother, with a kind face in a place of peace. It was very comforting. She realized how worried I was about what was happening in my life and the future, and she told me, ‘Everything will be fine. Let it be.”
