The French metal band performed at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games last Friday, 26th
O Gojira was responsible for representing “the entire metal community” during the performance at the opening ceremony of Paris Olympic Games. The French band performed “Ah, Ça Ira” alongside the experimental opera singer Marina Viotti last Friday, 26th.
The song can be loosely translated as “Everything Will Be Fine”, and was popularized during the French Revolution. The concert was included in the “Liberté” section of the event, which emphasized French history from a political and freedom perspective.
The group became the first metal band to participate in the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

In an interview with The New York Times (via NME), the frontman Joe Duplantier admitted that he felt the pressure of portraying the musical genre to one of the largest television audiences in the world.
The singer stated that he wanted the performance to be a source of pride for “the entire metal community on the world stage”. He also added that the song chosen for the show was appropriate because it connected to the period of the revolution: “It was a very bloody era in the history of France. So, it was very metal.”
