Cyndi Lauper, one of the musical icons of the 80s, announced from the stage her farewell tour, entitled Girls just wanna have fun – a clear reference to his most famous success. The tour’s initial leg will span North America, starting October 18 in Montreal and concluding December 5 in Chicago. Recently, Lauper released the documentary Cyndi Lauper: Let the Canaries Singwhich explores her life and career. The documentary is available on Paramount+ and offers an intimate look at the singer’s journey. When asked about her reason for stepping away from the stage, Lauper was candid in saying that age can limit her performance.
In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel, transcribed by Consequence, she stressed the importance of ending her touring career feeling strong. “I’m strong now, but I don’t know what I’m going to be like in four years,” Lauper said. “I want to be able to do it feeling strong. I want to celebrate with people and do something fun.”
In an interview with Variety, Lauper reinforced her resolve, explaining that she wants to deliver something exceptional while she still can.
“I’ve noticed that I’m getting older, so I want to do it while I can to offer something great. I want to give back, say ‘thank you,’ and have fun. I’d rather you remember me that way. I don’t want to be on a walk saying, ‘OK, girls!’ And I want to be willing to do something, do it well, and say, ‘Hey, I love you all! ‘”
While the tour marks her farewell to the big stage, Lauper hasn’t ruled out the possibility of sporadic performances in the future, as long as they’re not too strenuous. “I’m sure I’ll still do shows, but I won’t do anything too big. That’s all. But I’m excited because this is a great gift for the fans,” she concluded.
