Rock In Rio 2024: Deep Purple is a rare breed in a festival that ignores its original genre

The legendary British band was one of the few commendable attractions of the first weekend of the Rio event

After the end of the show Deep purple this Sunday night, 15th, on the Sunset Stage at Rock in RioIt has become clear: rock bands are dying out. There are only a few established bands from the 60s and 70s still active, and for this reason too, the genre that gives the festival its name has been almost completely ignored in this year’s edition.

If in 1985 – with Queen, Rod Stewart, Yes, AC/DC, among others – almost every day of the event was dedicated to rock, now only one date was segmented into the category. And it was the turn of the British group, with timeless hits like Smoke on the water AND silencedelivering what thousands of Rock City rockers have been expecting.

The band with almost 60 years of career, which releases the new album =1had already held a personal exhibition in San Paolo last Friday the 13th. READ MORE HERE

This Sunday, the 15th, the veterans took the stage at the RIR after the Evanescenceexponent of melodic heavy metal, and preceded the headliner avenged sevenfoldanother representative of the heavy sound. Besides them, the “Rock Day” included the Americans Voyagewith his radio hits.

Ian Gillanone of the last great frontmen in activity, he demonstrated vitality and enviable vocal power at 79 years old. He had to face technical problems during the performance of the opening song, Highway Starbut which were soon overcome.

The same youthful strength was seen in the other senior members: the tireless drummer Ian Paice; the confident bassist Roger Glover and the virtuoso keyboardist Don Airey.

The lineup’s crowning glory, however, comes from newcomer Simon McBride, 45, a guitarist hired in 2022 to replace Steve Morse. Energetic, he’s given Purple a new look, blending the styles of Morse and founder Ritchie Blackmore, who wrote the riffs that propelled the band to global stardom.

The two songs from the new album – Lazy clod AND A little to the side – were well received and fit perfectly into the context of the concert, a mix of nostalgia and novelty, which lasted just an hour.

Deep Purple’s performance, one of the few commendable performances of the first weekend of Rock In Rio, serves as a sobering reminder for modern festival organizers, obsessed with solo pop that, most likely, will not have the longevity and impact of the great bands that have already left their mark on music history.
