Pioneering Jamaican Ska Band Takes 60th Anniversary Tour to Brazil
Jamaican band Skatalites will bring their 60th anniversary tour to São Paulo. Formed in 1964, the pioneering ska band accompanied artists on recording sessions at the legendary Studio One, a venue that introduced Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff and other historic names in Jamaican music to the world.
Musicians such as Tommy McCook, Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Lloyd Brevett, Lloyd Knibb, Jackie Mittoo, Johnny Moore, Jah Jerry Haynes and Jackie Opel decided to join after realizing that they would not receive credit for their work. They had created countless hits without anyone knowing that they were behind the recordings. Their first album, released in 1964, was a huge success and the song “Man in the Street”, written by Don Drummond, made the UK Top 10. His version of the theme song from the film “Guns of Navarone” became another ska landmark. However, the band broke up in 1965, partly due to personal problems between the members, who went their separate ways.
Despite this, they met again a few times in the studio in the 1970s, until they decided to reunite to play at the Reggae Sunsplash festival in 1983. The success was such that they have continued to perform ever since, influencing generations of artists, musicians and bands around the world. Most of the founding members have passed away, but the group continues to retrain with disciples and contemporaries.
The band, by the way, has already visited Brazil before, recording here the DVD “Arena”, recorded at the SESC Pompéia theater, in São Paulo, as well as playing at Virada Cultural, Circo Voador and in a special on MTV Brasil.
The new show will take place on December 13 at Cine Joia (Praça Carlos Gomes, 82 – Liberdade), with first-party tickets priced at R$100 and advance tickets can be purchased on site or on the Sympla website.
