Lady Gaga has released a provocative preview of one of the songs from her surprise album accompanying “Joker: Delirium a Two,” Harlequin. “The Joker,” a rock-tinged tune that appears to be co-star Joaquin Phoenix’s theme song, is accompanied by a video in which Gaga’s Harley Quinn takes a midnight stroll through the Louvre Museum in Paris for some late-night fun .
“There’s always a joker in the deck/ There’s always a lonely clown,” Gaga sings to the sound of a light guitar as she strolls through I.M. Pei’s glass pyramid and dances along the steps with the Victory of Samothrace sculpture in the background. Wearing a modest prairie dress, Chuck Taylor low-top sneakers and polka-dot socks, with her hair dyed red, Gaga (as Quinn) sings, “The poor laughing fool falls on his back / And everyone loves him when he’s below / There’s always a funny guy in the game / But he’s only funny by chance”, a short summary of the tragic character of the anti-hero Jack Oswald White, the killer clown.
At night, with the museum all to herself, Gaga/Quinn aims her “digital guns” and shoots priceless works of art while the pace and intensity of the music increases to match her character’s sinister plans. “And they all laugh at him, just the same/They don’t see his lonely heart breaking,” he sings as his voice reaches a crescendo and Quinn smiles crookedly and waves as she looks at the Mona Lisa.
With the electric guitars cranking up the volume and the drums starting to play, Gaga screams, “They don’t care as long as there’s a fool/Only a fool, as foolish as can be/There’s always a wild card/This is the rule, but fate is fate.” hand I see / The joker is meeeee!!” while Harley takes a tube of lipstick and gives the most iconic painting of a smiling woman a new blood-red, Joker-style smile, worthy of a Chelsea smile.
Satisfied with her work, Gaga leaves, her eye makeup starting to run down her face, as the guitars get louder and she repeats “I am the Joker” as she parades through the dark galleries of the Louvre. “There is always a wild card,” Gaga wrote in the video preview, along with hashtags for the museum, the film and the upcoming “Figures du Fou” exhibition at the Louvre. Not surprisingly, the august institution is clearly involved in promoting the film, as it changed the official image on its X (Twitter) account to the Joker-style lipstick smile on the Mona Lisa.
The exhibition “Figures du Fou” (which translates to “Figures of the Fool”), which opens October 16, is described as an analysis “of the ubiquity of fools in Western art and culture in the late Middle Ages, and attempts to interpret the meaning of these figures, which seem to play a fundamental role in the advent of modernity. The fool may make us laugh, with his abundance of frivolous antics, but he also brings with him a wealth of hidden facets of an erotic, scatological, tragic or violent nature. Capable of the best and the worst, the fool entertains, warns or denounces; it subverts the values of society and can even overthrow the established order.” In other words, the Joker.
On Tuesday, Gaga surprised Little Monsters by announcing that their album Harlequin would be released on Friday (September 27). On the LP cover, Gaga is depicted standing in the shower, fully clothed, with the water running clown makeup down her face, as happens at the end of “The Joker” video.
On the back of a milk carton, Gaga appeared to reveal the album’s 13-song track list, which includes some recognizable classics like “Get Happy,” “That’s Entertainment,” “Oh When the Saints” and “World on a String”. ”.
Gaga recently revealed that her upcoming, as-yet-untitled seventh studio album will be released in February, while a single is expected to be released next month. “Joker: Delirium for Two” opens in theaters on October 4.
