The band releases its first album in 16 years in November
About to release his first studio album in 16 years, The Cure I already have material for the next album. Songs of a Lost World It should be released on November 1st — and its successors are also on the way.
In an interview with Matt Everitt (via NME), Robert Smith revealed that the band intended to release an album to celebrate their 40th anniversary: ”I thought: ‘The band’s 40th anniversary is in 2018, and the 40th anniversary of the first album [Three Imaginary Boys] it’ll be in 2019, so we’ll do something that sums up what the band is and how far we’ve come.’ It was a big plan — and big plans don’t usually work out very well, in my experience.”
“It wasn’t really being done for the right reasons. It was a bit ‘triumphal’, I suppose, looking back. The tone was wrong. In the end, what happened in 2018 was a great way to mark the band’s anniversary. It gave me time to think: ‘Why would we make a new album?'”, he continued.
The vocalist added: “What happened in 2019 was much more natural and everything evolved from that. There was no longer this idea that we were ‘celebrating’ something or marking a moment — it was becoming something much more artistic, to be honest. rather than something that was part of this idea of, ‘Here’s what The Cure after 40 years — be impressed!'”
Smith He also explained that the group has a lot of material in storage. “The demo of the oldest song on this album was made in 2010. They span all of that time. Most of them, probably five, were written since 2017. Three of them: one was in 2010, one in 2011, and one in between 2013 or 2014. There were so many songs to choose from,” he recalled.

We recorded about 25 or 26 songs in 2019. We recorded three albums in 2019 — that was always the problem. I tried to finish three albums. After waiting so long, I thought, ‘Let’s just release albums from The Cure every few months!’ Looking back, you think, ‘Really? I could have done it a lot better.’
“This time it will work. Finishing this one, the second one is also practically ready. The third one is a little more difficult because, well, if we get there… Talking about the third album, do you see what I mean? I just can’t hold back,” he confessed.
