Modern Playlist: 50 recent alternative audio clips, from post-punk to electronica

List brings together the new generation of indie and electronic artists and current releases from veterans such as X, Faithless, De-Phazz, Dandy Warhols and Justice

The Modern Playlist is a selection of new alternative sounds collected from 50 recent music videos, combining newcomers and recent songs from underground veterans. This week’s list starts with post-punk guitars and ends with house music beats. The musical journey crosses new wave, punk, garage rock, acid jazz, drum’n’bass, disco funk and even alternative hip-hop.

Old acquaintances and new sounds

At the head of the list of veterans of the selection is the band X, pioneers of punk rock from Los Angeles. The historic band composed of John Doe and Excene Cervenka recorded seven albums between 1980 and 1993, and after sold-out return concerts they released their eighth album last August. The list also includes an original member of the 1990s acid jazz movement, the German group De-Phazz, who performed a dance hit based on a Sergio Mendes sample, as well as two survivors of the popular English electronic scene 90s, DJ Bonobo and the group Faithless, which releases its first music since the death of founder Maxi Jazz in 2022.

Since the 2000s, the rebirth is that of the Dandy Warhols, an alternative psychedelic band who became known for the theme song of the “Veronica Mars” series (2004). Slightly more recent, the French duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay have been acclaimed since 2007 as Justice. This year, the duo released a new album and headlined several international festivals, including Primavera Sound in Barcelona. The recording in the selection is a collaboration with Australian psychedelic band Tame Impala, a darling of alternative rock. To top it off, there’s another electronic music partnership, between DJ Jamie xx (of the British band The xx) and Swedish singer Robyn.

Most of the videos, however, are good news, as singers ELLiS·D and Jupy, both from Brighton, England, appear in the new wave revival section, evoking Talking Heads and the B-52s respectively. Parisian female quartet Alvinda combines the pre-punk attitude and look of the Runaways era. London couple Kit Sebastian transform the lounge into psychedelia. Dutch duo I Believe in My Mess mixes funk with dub and David Bowie. The American Kassie Krut, former singer and guitarist of Palm, offers pieces of danceable industrial rock. And then there’s the Chinese-American indie pop of Chinese American Bear, the distorted electronica of New York trio Fcukers (pun intended), the rap of Haitian-Canadian Kaytranada and the swing of Mercury-winning British jazz group Music Ezra Collective. Award, among many others.

Closing the song is a veteran, Swedish Molly Nilsson, who began her career in the German club scene in the late 2000s, founded her own record label, became a strong name in European synthpop and is now launching a manifesto communist dance, based on historical records. of the House Un-American Activities Committee of the 1940s.

Play and dance
