Arthur Moreira Lima had been treating bowel cancer since 2023 and resided in his family’s home in Florianópolis (SC). “Our thanks to this incomparable giant, for everything he did for Brazilian and piano culture. May his name always be recognized among Brazilian heroes,” the institute said.
Born in 1940 in Rio de Janeiro, Arthur Moreira Lima began studying the piano at the age of 6. His teacher was Lúcia Branco, who also taught the instrument to Tom Jobim and Nelson Freire. At the age of 8 he played a Mozart concerto with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra.
It didn’t take long for the pianist to gain international recognition. In 1965 he placed second in the Frédéric Chopin International Piano Competition in Poland. In 1970 he won third place at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, Russia.
In Brazil, Moreira Lima has gained prominence as a performer of Brazilian popular music, particularly with recordings of Ernesto Nazareth and choro and samba classics. Since then he created the Piano pela Estrada project, combining the popular with the erudite.
With a piano in the back of a truck, transformed into a stage, the musician fought for the democratization of classical culture in the most diverse corners of the country.
In total, Arthur Moreira Lima recorded more than 60 albums and performed with the Leningrad, Moscow and Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the Berlin, Vienna and Prague Symphony Orchestras.
