Title track of the Beatles’ final album, “Let It Be” was the last big hit. An absolute success, often associated with the end of the Fab Four’s activities — a bittersweet farewell, in a way. Curiously, Paul McCartney doesn’t think the song would do well if it were released today.
In 2015, Macca talked to the magazine Esquire (via Showbiz CheatSheet) on the subject. The interviewer, at first, said that he couldn’t imagine him sitting down to compose a song like “Let It Be” at that moment.
The artist agreed. He then gave an interesting insight into the success of the track, the circumstances in which it was created and even the importance of Beatles for the final result.
Paul he said:
I think it’s true. When you sit down to write a song, it goes through your head. You say, ‘this won’t be like ‘Eleanor Rigby’‘. Bob Dylan was asked why he doesn’t compose another ‘Tambourine Man’ and he said, ‘because I’m not that guy anymore.’ I think this is the truth. Part of it has to do with circumstances.”
Then came the reflection on why the song, most likely, would not achieve the same success if it were released today. In the view of McCartneythe involvement of other colleagues Beatles.
