Why the song “Let it Be” would fail if it came out today, according to Paul McCartney

The artist believes that even if he were capable of composing something like this, an important element would be missing in his opinion

Title track of the Beatles’ final album, “Let It Be” was the last big hit. An absolute success, often associated with the end of the Fab Four’s activities — a bittersweet farewell, in a way. Curiously, Paul McCartney doesn’t think the song would do well if it were released today.

In 2015, Macca talked to the magazine Esquire (via Showbiz CheatSheet) on the subject. The interviewer, at first, said that he couldn’t imagine him sitting down to compose a song like “Let It Be” at that moment.

The artist agreed. He then gave an interesting insight into the success of the track, the circumstances in which it was created and even the importance of Beatles for the final result.

Paul he said:

I think it’s true. When you sit down to write a song, it goes through your head. You say, ‘this won’t be like ‘Eleanor Rigby’‘. Bob Dylan was asked why he doesn’t compose another ‘Tambourine Man’ and he said, ‘because I’m not that guy anymore.’ I think this is the truth. Part of it has to do with circumstances.”

Then came the reflection on why the song, most likely, would not achieve the same success if it were released today. In the view of McCartneythe involvement of other colleagues Beatles.

These songs were released by Beatlesthe biggest band of all. If I did ‘Let It Be’ now, she might not get as much attention. You may not be able to make a recording as Beatles or as harmonious as the one we made.”

Is this a factor that discourages the artist? None of that. It guarantees:

But that doesn’t stop me from trying.”

“Let It Be” and farewell

Although it is signed by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, “Let It Be” was almost entirely composed by the former.

Interestingly, it was also the last track released by Beatles as a single while still a band. When the album and the single “The Long and Winding Road” they left, Macca had already announced his departure from the group — motivated, according to him, by Lennon actually left — which led to the end of the activities.

Beatles: product of their time?

Still at Esquire, Paul McCartney was asked if he thought the success of Beatles it had to do with the time in which they broke out, along with several other musical talents. For the artist, this certainly helped, but the Fab Four also had their individual qualities.

We appeared in a very rich period. But let’s not forget, those four kids were f***ing good. It wasn’t just about the period. Tell me another group of four kids, or girls, who had what they Beatles they had.”

You Beatles They existed between 1960 and 1970 and changed music during that time. In total, they released twelve studio albums, as well as separate materials. A song produced from old recordings, “Now and Then”was made available in 2023.
