The historic interpreter of Beija-Flor was emotional when confirming his farewell to the 2025 parade
Neguinho confirms retirement
Neguinho da Beija-Flor announced that the 2025 Carnival parade will mark his official farewell to the Marquis de Sapucaí and Beija-Flor de Nilópolis. The artist, who has become one of the greatest icons of Brazilian samba, shared the news this Wednesday (20) during an interview on Globo’s RJ1 news program.
“This 2025 carnival is my last carnival at the Marquês de Sapucaí and with Beija-Flor. In 2025 I will finish my career on the avenue. It’s difficult [falar isso]. We die twice, when we actually die and when we stop acting. I’m stopping after 50 years of Beija-Flor”, he declared emotionally.
Moment of emotion and reflections
During the interview, Neguinho couldn’t hold back tears as he reflected on the decision. “Time is the enemy of perfection. Time is wonderful, so wonderful that I turned 75. After 50 years with this community, this moment is difficult,” he said.
Regarding the future of Beija-Flor, he underlined the importance of passing the baton to new talents. “The time has come. We must give opportunities to those who want to be Neguinho da Beija-Flor. At the beginning of my career I dreamed of being a Jamelão,” he said, referring to the legendary Mangueira interpreter.
Homage from Beija-Flor
In an Instagram post, Beija-Flor paid tribute to the performer, praising his historical importance. “We will live the last parade with the voice of our history. After decades of emotions, Neguinho concludes his cycle as official interpreter of our school. We are full of pride, gratitude and respect. The professional side ends, but the bond is eternal. Your story is engraved in our colors, in our sambas and in our hearts.”
Previously, the club had even denied rumors of the singer’s retirement earlier in the week, declaring that “Neguinho continues to be our voice”. However, it was the artist himself who confirmed his decision, putting an end to all speculation.
Legacy of Brazilian samba
Born in Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, on June 29, 1949, Neguinho da Beija-Flor has become one of the greatest icons of Brazilian carnival. With his characteristic voice and the iconic slogan “Look at the Beija-Flor there, people!”, he marked the history of the Nilópolis school. His connection with the association is so deep that he even included his stage name on the birth certificate.
The 2025 Rio Carnival, therefore, will not only be a celebration of samba, but also the farewell of a voice that has symbolized decades of unforgettable samba.
