Director is notorious for being eclectic both in cinema and music, which plays a fundamental role in his films
The films of Quentin Tarantino have a very special relationship with music, always chosen for important moments. The filmmaker pays attention to the soundtrack of his works and is also a big fan and connoisseur of the subject. His works have even been responsible for “resurrecting” hits and artists from the past.
That being said, Tarantino has already revealed that he believes that there is an extremely underrated singer in the history of music: David Cassidy. His relationship with this artist’s work dates back to his childhood.
The film director himself explained in an interview with Rolling Stone USA:
As a kid, I was more involved in top 40 chart stuff. The first record I bought was by The Partridge Family. I still listen to their records. In fact, I think David Cassidy is one of the most underrated vocalists in the history of rock and roll.”
The Partridge Family was an American sitcom originally aired between 1970 and 1974. The series’ story revolves around a family that was also a rock band.
David Cassidy was one of the singers alongside his stepmother in real life, Shirley Jones. The group from the series released eight albums while they were active, which elevated the singer to the status of a teen celebrity at the time.
With the end of the program, Cassidy embarked on a solo career that did not take off due to personal problems. In 2017, the vocalist died of liver failure, after years of untreated alcoholism. The actor and singer’s last studio album was A Touch of Bluereleased in 2003.
Despite the admiration of Tarantinothe director never used any song from The Partridge Family or from David Cassidy as a soundtrack for his films.
Quentin Tarantino’s soundtracks
The films of Quentin Tarantino They usually have striking soundtracks, almost inseparable from some moments. The director is remembered for his eclectic choice of music for his works, including elaborate scenes for certain songs — something not so common in the segment.
In a 2016 interview with the website Double J, Quentin spoke about the relationship between his films and the songs that are part of them. The filmmaker compared the selection of songs to creating a mixtape — a tape recorded by someone with tracks of their choice.
I think one of the reasons people respond to my soundtracks is because I make them not unlike the way I would make a mixtape. They have the same personality as a mixtape. On a mixtape, I would put some cool snippet from a movie or commercial that I found funny in between things. I was really good at making mixtapes. So my soundtracks are just this really professional version of my own mixtapes, which really reflect my personality and my tastes.”
Curiously, Tarantino He has never been nominated for film awards in categories related to music, which is considered one of his strong points by his fans. On the other hand, he has already competed for five Grammys for Best Soundtrack Compilation for Visual Media, with Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), Inglourious Basterds (2009), Django Unchained (2012) and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).
