Oscar-winning comedy legend Mel Brooks is still working at 96. The latest film of him, paws of fury: the legend of Hank, is loosely based on one of his most iconic films, Hot stools. Of course, Brooks was contacted by those behind the animated film for approval and apparently responded in as much Mel Brooks as possible.
We recently spoke to one of Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hankdirectors of Rob Minkoff, and when asked how Brooks responded to the idea of a hot stools adaptation in the early stages, Minkoff told the story with the following:
In fact, it all happened before my time. But I realized that when you first heard the idea, you said “it’s a mashugana idea,” which means it’s a crazy idea. But then she left with him.
So even though Rob Minkoff had not yet been hired to take the reins, when he boarded, there were still stories circulating about how Mel Brooks had responded to the idea of adapting one of his most successful films. You may have thought he was crazy, but in an exciting way, since he was the first person to join the cast. After that, the dominoes fell quite quickly, as Brooks was followed by Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Cera, Ricky Gervais, George Takei and many other comic talents.
While it is fair to say that adaptation is “free”, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank relies heavily Hot stools. The original title of the production was even samurai on fire, although they probably noticed that we were a little irritated. The way in which hot stools featured a black sheriff preparing for bankruptcy in a white town, paws of fury This is a dog that is designated to be the samurai of a cat city. It’s also packed with references to the classic film, including the iconic horse kicking scene.
It’s crazy that the 96-year-old actor, screenwriter, director and producer is still working and on feature film projects that go far beyond the coronavirus public service announcements he filmed with his son. Mel Brooks attended Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank for most of the film’s seven years, with more to come. I mean, it’s in an upcoming TV project called fairytale forest along with Jane Lynch and Matt Lucas. We will definitely keep you updated when the release date of this show is announced.
