In addition to organizing the event, Artie Kornfeld was one of the biggest names in the music industry in the 60s and 70s
Musician, composer and record executive, Artie Kornfeld was one of the organizers of the festival Woodstockin 1969, alongside michael lang. Amid his achievements, there is an unusual “honor”: one day, John Lennon urinated on his leg.
Himself Kornfeldnow more than eight decades old, recalled what happened in an interview with Goldmine. The story begins in a recording studio in New York, around 3 am — and, as expected, involves drug use.
Artie told:
I was at the Hit Factory. My sound engineer, Shelly Yakusand I were with my musician friends, Hugh McCracken and David Sanbornand all my friends. Suddenly it was 3 am. So I said, ‘guys, let’s take a half hour break.’ I ran to the bathroom like a madman and poured four lines of pharmaceutical cocaine into the back of a urinal.”
Right now, Kornfeld He is surprised by a strange sensation. Half wet, half warm.

The executive continued the report:
I went to the urinal and started smelling the four lines. I felt a warm jet running down my left leg. I looked over my shoulder and saw the head of John Lennon. I knew that John was in the studio next door with Jack Douglas (producer) making the album Double Fantasy (1980). Then he looked at me and said: ‘I can’t see anything without my glasses and I left them in the studio’. Then he asked, ‘who are you?’ and I said, ‘oh, I am Artie Kornfeld‘ and he said, ‘that’s amazing, you’re Artie Kornfeld… I know who you are.’”
“Normal” conversation
The conversation continued normally, who knows how. John Lennon revealed that the first record he bought in his life contained the song “The Pied Piper”recorded by Crispian St. Peters and composed of Artie Kornfeld.
However, the executive would still have another strange situation related to the Beatlesand more precisely, the Yoko Ono.
Yoko Ono’s lawsuit
The complicated question of Artie Kornfeld with Yoko Ono It happened precisely during a period in which the couple was separated. It was up to the executive, who knew the social circle of the Beatlesbut it had nothing to do with the story.
Artie recalled:
This was the week when Yoko exchanged it for David Spinozzathe guitarist and producer who was also a friend of mine. I was going out with John the week he got together with May Pang. I interviewed her. And do you know what happened? Do you know what Yoko he did? She sued the radio station where I broadcast. It was so successful that they sent two legal notices saying that it was harming his life and his career, so he had to stop and give up.”
Lennon had an extramarital relationship with May Pangthe couple’s secretary, in the mid-1970s. Their involvement took place during a period in which the musician was further away from Onowho at the same time, knew and encouraged a relationship between the two. The case lasted until 1975, approximately.
