The Cure frontman reflected on the band’s acclaimed 14th album

Robert Smithleader of The Curerevealed details about the creation of the band’s latest album, Songs Of A Lost Worldand explained why the album was almost called Live From The Moon. The revelation took place during his participation in the Tim’s Listening Partyby Tim Burgess, where Smith explored the inspirations behind the work and the connection to the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

It was the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, which I was obsessed with as a child. I wanted to be a football player, but if I couldn’t, I wanted to be an astronaut. I thought it was like, ‘Well, if I fail at football, I’ll be an astronaut,’ because that’s how the world seemed to be going. How wrong was I?

The musician recalled the day he watched the lunar landing with his family: “I stood in the garden looking at the sky and thinking: ‘I’m going to the moon’. This desire to follow one’s dreams was always present in my compositions. I often wrote this line in different forms, and it represented the desire to simply do what whatever you wanted. Like ‘Follow your dreams,’ but it was real.”

During recordings of Songs Of A Lost Worldthe band recreated the 1969 atmosphere at Rockfield Studios in Wales. “There was no modern technology allowed in the studio. We brought magazines, newspapers and board games from the time, like Apollo. It was like traveling back in time, creating an atmosphere that inspired us.”

Smith explained that the alternative title, Live From The Moonreflected his passion for astronomy and the spirit of exploration of the past. “Since landing on the moon, I have had a telescope and love spending hours observing space. It gives me perspective on how small our time on Earth is.”

In addition to reflecting on the past, Smith revealed that Songs Of A Lost World is one of the most personal projects of his career, dealing with themes of mortality and loss. “Darkness has always been present in our songs, but there is always enough heart and opulence to balance things out.”

Recently, the The Cure released the EP A Fragile Thing and announced a live album celebrating the debut of Songs Of A Lost World at Troxy, London. Smith also confirmed that the band has two more albums almost finished and plans to return to the road in the fall of 2025.

We’re getting ready for the next tour and celebrating the next big birthday in 2028. There are still so many stories to tell and songs to share.
