The English singer married a Brazilian in 2017 and has since settled in the country, despite having an official document
Oli Sykes was born in Ashford, England, but has lived in Brazil for some years. The singer of bring me The Horizon He has been married to the Brazilian model since 2017 Alissa Salis and despite spending much of his time travelling, he revealed that virtually all of the covid-19 pandemic has remained in the country.
Over the years, publications indicated that he lived in cities in the state of São Paulo: Taubaté, an inland city 130 km from the capital, and Ubatuba, on the coast and 223 km from the megalopolis. In 2023 he even showed on the networks the arrival of his national document: the National Migration Registration Card (RNM), aimed at foreigners who have taken up residence here.
Did Oli enjoy living in Brazil? Apparently yes: in an interview with 89 FM rock radio (go Chatty), the singer also shared what he appreciates most about our country. Initially, he stated:
“The climate, the people, the food. The lifestyle is very different to the English one, but for me it’s very positive.”
The Brazilian lifestyle, according to him, is a little “slower”. This is something beneficial for the singer, who needed to get out of the faster pace of England.
“I think mentally I needed to slow down a bit, and it’s really hard to do that in England, whereas when you come here, everything is a bit slower. The people are much more relaxed. I’ve wanted to get away for a while. For a long time , I feel the need to have moments of disconnection and distance myself from who I am in the band and everything.”
Sykes also noted that he remained in Brazil during the pandemic. From the tone of his speech, however, it didn’t seem like it was expected.
“I never thought it would be in Brazil, but we were stuck here in isolation and I just realized how at peace I feel when I’m here. I really like it.”
Oli Sykes and the drug fallout during the pandemic
Despite the positive balance, the pandemic period has not been easy for Oli Sykes. In addition to the direct impact of Covid-19, the period has brought a mental health crisis to several countries. Faced with this situation, people did not seek help and chose to self-medicate. This was the case of the singer, who had a drug relapse.
In an interview with Speakerexplained:
“I started using drugs again during the pandemic. I think it was simply because I was used to being exhausted. When the pandemic hit and I didn’t have much to do, I got tired of not being used to being a real person that I had a relapse.”
Sykes Refrevealed that the fear of Bring Me the Horizon losing all the momentum it had gained before the pandemic put him in a fragile state of mind. Until then, their work ethic dictated a frenetic pace, as any interruption could be fatal for the band.
“I thought my success was based on the mentality: ‘If we stop for one minute, our band will fall apart, no one will like us, we won’t be bigger. We always have to make new music, we have to motivate ourselves, we have to do this and that , we don’t have an album’.”
Four years have passed Posthuman: survival horror (2020) e Post-human: Nex Gen (2024), the two most recent versions of bring me The Horizon. During this time, Oli Sykes needed to restructure his thought process – and naturally the typically anxious ideas were put aside.
