Music marathon highlights releases from Gift, Blushing, The Horrors, Futureheaven, HotWax, Dutch Mustard, Slow Fiction and Luby Sparks
Selecting alternative clips
The Modern Playlist is a selection of new alternative sounds collected in 50 recent clips, combining new generation discoveries and current songs from veterans of the underground scene. The current roster features 3 hours of guitars, from jarring spectacle to ethereal dreampop, with indie folk guitars, coldwave keyboards, Britpop energy and psychedelic journeys completing the musical journey.
The roster includes two legendary guitarists from the British indie scene, Johnny Marr (ex-The Smiths) and Bernard Butler (ex-Suede), in new solos. But there are also older veterans, who play a cover of the most famous guitarist of all time: Cactus (formed by drummer Carmine Appice in 1969) in a venture with singer Melanie, the first lady of Woodstock. Jimi Hendrix’s contemporary duo sounds incredibly current in the psychedelic class of 2024.
Alongside artists already established in the indie scene, such as Blushing, Swirlpool, Futureheaven, A Place to Bury Strangers, The Horrors, Sunflower Bean, Dutch Mustard, HotWax, Mediocre and Sharon Van Etten, the playlist leaves room for emerging names such as Gift, Blue Zero, Teary, Spiral XP, Slow Fiction and Wisp, without drowning out more distant noises (of the US-UK axis), including the Belarusian band Molchat Doma, the Italians Glazyhaze (from Venice!), the French SCHØØL, the German Attic Ocean, the Belgian Maquillage, the Norwegian Mayflower Madame, the Argentine Buenos Vampiros and the Japanese Luby Sparks.
Play and mosh
As always, the videos are organized in the playlist in order of sonic affinity and in an indie club video recording atmosphere: to watch them on Smart TV, look for Cast in Chrome’s Settings tab or More Tools/Stream etc. in Edge. Try listening without skipping tracks on the Premium version of YouTube (without ad breaks), pressing play to mosh while the songs mix automatically.
