The singers stopped following each other on Instagram after the controversy over the change in the lyrics of their song axé.
Changing song lyrics generates friction
Ivete Sangalo stopped following Claudia Leitte on social media after appreciating a public criticism made by Salvador’s Minister of Culture. The discussion was motivated by the alteration of the lyrics of a song, considered offensive by sectors of the cultural community.
The controversy began after Claudia Leitte changed an excerpt of the song “Caranguejo” that said “I salute Queen Iemanjá” to “I sing my king Yeshua”, referring to Jesus in Hebrew. The change sparked accusations of religious intolerance and was widely criticized on social media.

Pedro Tourinho, Salvador’s culture minister, published an article condemning such changes without directly mentioning the singer. “When an artist says he is part of this movement [do Axé music]he salutes black people and their culture, he venerates their percussion and their musicianship, he is successful and makes a lot of money, but, suddenly, he chooses to rewrite history and remove Orixás’ name from the songs, don’t commit mistakes: the name for this is racism, and it is the surreal and explicit reinforcement of what was wrong at the time,” he wrote.
Ivete Sangalo liked the post, who also commented “Yes!” and added applause emojis, signaling support for Tourinho’s demonstration.
Claudia Leitte’s repercussions and defense
After the backlash mounted, Tourinho disabled comments on the post. Claudia Leitte, for her part, maintained the musical change, stopped following Ivete and responded to criticism during a press conference before the Virada Festival in Salvador. “Racism is an issue that needs to be discussed with due seriousness, and not superficially. I highly value respect, solidarity and integrity. We cannot negotiate these values in any way, nor throw them to the Internet court,” he said Claudia.
The relationship between Ivete and Claudia, previously marked by collaborations on events and partnerships, seems to have come to an end after the episode, with the two artists no longer following each other on Instagram.
