In an interview in Brazil, the group’s first vocalist gave details about the beginning of the formation and how he left AC/DC
Original member of AC/DCthe vocalist Dave Evans gave more details about the choice of the band’s name.
Evans he participated in the iconic group’s first live shows in 1973 and recorded the first two singles: “Can I Sit Next To You Girl” and “Baby, Please Don’t Go”.
He was accompanied by his guitarist brothers Malcolm and Angus Youngthe drummer Colin Burgess and the bassist Larry Van Kriedt.
The vocalist left the microphones AC/DC the following year after disagreements with one of the band’s organizers. He was replaced by Bon Scottwho recorded the first studio albums.
In an interview with the Brazilian podcast Podpokas(via NME), Evans commented on the first days with the AC/DC and revealed how the name was created.
The story behind the name AC/DC
According to the vocalist, the members were already reunited and writing songs together, but the union had not been baptized. It was then that Alan Kissacksa man involved in the formation of the band, said that the group would perform live for the first time.
We had to choose a name because it would be in a few weeks. So we started discussing names among ourselves, but no one could agree. I had some really great names, but they didn’t like it,” he explained. Evans.
To solve the problem, it was agreed that each person would arrive at the next rehearsal with three suggestions. Then, they would write the names on pieces of paper and draw the chosen one. “Whatever it was, that’s what we would call ourselves,” he added.
According to the singer, he fulfilled the agreement, but the band decided to give up the idea after the relative of one of the members suggested “AC/DC”.
When we all arrived together, Malcolm Young told us: ‘Look, my sister-in-law suggested a name… AC/DC’. And I thought it was an easy name to remember and it was on the side of a lot of electrical appliances.”
How does the combination AC/DC means, from the acronym in English, alternating current/direct current, it is written in several electronic circuits. “Free advertising… free advertising on the side of all these devices, and it’s easy to say, and it means energy”, recalled the musician.
The decision was unanimous. “We all shook hands and were AC/DC… those three names I made up, I went home and threw away.”
Evans and AC/DC currently leaving
This is not the first time that Dave Evans comments moments with the AC/DC in Brazilian programs. At the end of 2023, the singer told stories about the group on the podcast Volume Guard.
Among other things, Evans recalled how he left the group:
We were all very, very young. Our ambitions were forever. I didn’t say, ‘Oh, I’m going to be in a band.’ No. I had my whole career, my whole life to sing. I’ve been singing since I can remember. I wasn’t going to stop because of a band I was with, that I broke up with.”
Without revealing many details, the guitarist also said that he had a very intimate conversation with his replacement Bon Scottgoing so far as to say that he was not surprised by the death of Scott in 1980.
As for the AC/DCthe band remains active. After touring Europe, the group announced the tour for 2025 “PowerUp” in North America. No date in Brazil has been announced.
