The Rio de Janeiro court determines a value of R$50 thousand for each violation in case of failure to comply with the court’s decision
Legal dispute over copyright
The Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro (TJRJ) has confirmed the decision prohibiting the reproduction, distribution and commercialization of the song “Million Years Ago”, by Adele, without the authorization of the singer and composer Toninho Geraes. The measure provides for the removal of the song from all digital platforms.
The court’s decision is part of the trial in which Geraes accuses Adele, producer Greg Kurstin, record label XL Recordings and distributor Universal Music of plagiarizing the song “Mulheres”, popularized by Martinho da Vila. The Brazilian composer requests compensation of R$ 1 million.
The music removal order has been in force since December 2024, but now includes a fine of R$50,000 for each violation of the decision.
Criminal complaint for ideological falsehood
In addition to the copyright case, in early January Toninho Geraes’ lawyers filed a criminal complaint against Adele, Greg Kurstin and the record companies for ideological and documentary falsification. According to the defense, the power of attorney presented by the artist and the company representatives contained “deletions and between lines inserted by hand”, which would indicate possible irregularities.
The dispute reinforces a legal dispute that has lasted for months and concerns one of Adele’s best-known songs, accused of having elements similar to the popular Brazilian composition.
So far Sony Music, Adele’s representative in Brazil, and Universal Music have not commented on the new chapter of the case. The space remains open for statements and updates.
