Kumite, a project together with musician Jared Colby, held its inaugural performance in Nashville, USA
Winner of four awards Grandmother with the Alabama Smoothiesguitarist and singer Brittany Howard played the first show with his new group, Kumite. The hardcore band performed in the city of Nashville, US last Sunday (January 12).
Howard joined Jared Colbywho also manages the solo project Second Spiritto inaugurate the new band. The news did not surprise fans. In November 2024 the artist announced that he would present a charity hardcore show in collaboration with the groups Snoper, Inner peace and the aforementioned Second Spirit.

Last year, the artist released the solo album And now?performed during a North American tour. She was also responsible for opening shows for Hozier during the musician’s stay in the UK
And Alabama trembles
While he dedicates himself to the new project, Brittany Howard has left fans hopeful about the eventual return of Alabama Smoothies.
In late December, the band reunited for a performance for the first time since 2017. The meeting took place in the city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, during a charity event. The singer had been chosen as the main attraction, originally for a “short and intimate” solo show.
She took the stage alone and performed an acoustic version of her song “Short and Sweet”. After, Howard He stopped the show and left the stage saying he needed to get a guitar.
Then he came back with the surprise. On the screen at the back of the stage, the phrase “Brittany Howard” was replaced with “Alabama Shakes”, signaling the return of the band members.
Even if the lineup wasn’t complete: the original drummer Steve Johnson did not participate for legal reasons: the musicians present performed a set list with nine songs that included hits from the albums Boys and girls (2012) e Sound and color (2015), the latter nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year. Among the songs was also presented “Always good”part of the film’s soundtrack The good side of life (2012).
