Production includes interviews with renowned national musicians and will be available on YouTube from January 25th
On January 25th, as part of the celebrations for the 471st anniversary of the city of São Paulo, the state’s Secretariat of Culture, Economy and Creative Industry will launch the documentary series Rock Algorithms.
Made possible through a partnership between social organizations São Paulo Association of Friends of Art (APAA) and Pinwheelresponsible for the Fábricas de Cultura program, the series presents a portrait of rock with a São Paulo focus, since the 1950s.
Rock Algorithms will be available on the YouTube channels of the CultSP Play platform (@cultspplay) and Fábricas de Cultura (@tvfabricas).
With fortnightly episodes of approximately 30 minutes, the documentary tells about the musical genre based on reports from artists of great national expression.
In the first episode, the interviewee is Tony Campellowhich talks about his career, which began in the late 1950s. The musician also provides an overview of the musical scene at the time, as well as indicating 10 Brazilian rock songs recorded in that decade.
The interviewees in the following episodes are also icons of Brazilian music: Lillian Knappby the duo Leno & Lilliantells about the Young Guard and 60s rock.
One of the greatest Brazilian guitarists, recognized for his solo “Black sheep”from the band Tutti Frutti, Luiz Carlinigives his testimony about the 1970s, marked by experimentalism.
Now the singer Clementlead singer of the band Innocentbrings, with great propriety, an account of the punk movement, as it was consolidated in Brazil in the 80s.
As a central part of all episodes, justifying the purpose of the project, each of these artists brings a list of ten recommendations of essential Brazilian rock songs from each decade.
I am very proud to say that I was part of this wave of artists who contributed to the so-called rock n’roll being accepted and cultivated in a way that later bore fruit, such as the youth guard, tropicália and other movements that came after the arrival of old rock”, analyzes Tony Campello in his testimony.
“The cultural richness of São Paulo is also very well represented in rock, since the arrival of the musical genre in Brazil. Several well-known names, in the most varied styles within the genre, have emerged in the state, where rock remains very alive and vibrant. Not only the style, but also the artists behind it, deserve records like this, so that this history and this cultural manifestation can reach more people”, he declares Gláucio Francageneral director of the São Paulo Association of Friends of Art.
Rock Algorithms
If before the salespeople in vinyl stores, radio announcers and VJs in the MTV they were largely responsible for curating and disseminating rock culture, today this function is being performed, to a large extent, by music streaming applications. It is their algorithms, without first or last name, that suggest songs to us, based on words typed into search engines.
Our project comes to rescue this rock space, which was a little lost in time and memories, with good recommendations made by personalities who made history in the segment”, he observes Renato Barreirossuperintendent of Promotion and Articulation of the Culture Factories managed by OS Catavento.
Musical education and cultural preservation are about memories that pass from generation to generation. This way, Rock Algorithms uses influential personalities of Brazilian rock in each decade to talk about important movements arising from the genre, since the 50s, and recommend to young people a playlist telling a little about the history of each song and each band.
