Guitarist joined Dave Mustaine’s group during the 1990s and cited a classic as a song that “diverges” from the repertoire
Marty Friedman was the guitarist of Megadeth During the 1990s, but left the band in 2000. He played with other names over the years and released solo studio records, but his most significant work took place during the time in the group led by Dave Mustaine.
The artist played classic albums of the thrash metal band, as Rust in Peace (1990) and Youthanasia (1994). Fifth work of Americans and according to Friedman’s participation, Countdown to Extinction (1992) eventually brought one of its greatest hits: “Symphony of Destruction” that, for the guitarist, “Maybe it’s the first pop song” from Megadeth.

In an interview with the journalist Gustavo Maiato (via Blabberouth), Marty commented on the song, released as single originally. Although Mustaine was the only one credited as a composer, Friedman stressed that all members had participation in their creation.
In addition to reiterating this during the conversation, the musician also recalled that he narrated the situation in his book:
“I wrote a lot about it in my autobiography, Japanese Dreaming (2024), in great detail about the composition process in Megadeth. And one important thing I wrote was the fact that, no matter who was the name in music, whose credit was, all the four members of the band worked exactly the same amount of time in the composition. Everyone worked the same in the creation of the songs, starting from scratch to complete them. ”
Friedman also talked about the feeling of being more comfortable in his position, since Countdown to Extinction It was not his first album with Megadeth. The guitarist also stated:
“So if I remember well, ‘Symphony of Destruction ‘ I was on the second album I recorded with the band, and at that time I was more comfortable because I was in the band almost two years ago. And maybe it was our first pop song. It was like a pop song, if you can say that. I was happy because you need to have pop music if you want to reach a massive amount of people. We managed to do this without losing our heavy metal fans. You can make a pop song, but if you lose your main audience, it’s not something we wanted to do. ”
