Music Friedman talks to RS about shows in Brazil with Kiko Loureiro, Megadeth, Rock in Rio and More

American guitarist based in Japan will excuse with Brazilian by eight cities in the country: “We will do things never done before in our careers”

Has been a decade since Marty Friedman was in Brazil for the last time. But the occasion was striking. The guitarist, known especially for his work with the Megadeth In the 1990s, he traveled over 20 cities by performing workshops. “I was told that this was the largest and longest tour of guitar workshops made by any foreign musician in the country,” said the American musician, based for years in Japan, in an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil.

Now it’s time to return, but for presentations themselves. Friedman will excuse with the Brazilian Kiko Loureiroanother virtuous guitar and also former megadeth member. The itinerary is slightly smaller than 2015, but still quite wide, as the duo will play in eight cities: Santo André (05/30), Brasilia (31/05), Goiânia (06/01), Belo Horizonte (06/06), Porto Alegre (06/06), Sao Paulo (07/06) and Curitiba (06/06). Alírio Netto (voice), Felipe Andreoli (low), Bruno Valverde (drums) and Luiz Rodrigues (guitar) accompany. Tickets are available in Kiko website.

And what are they going to play? Absolute secret. It is known that Loureiro promotes his latest solo album, Theory of mind (2024), while Friedman brings with him the album Drama (2024). Very different works – that of the Brazilian is very heavy, while the American one has an almost cinematic, dramatic approach as the title indicates – but there is in common the format of instrumental music focused on guitar. Would not amaze whether songs of these records appeared in the repertoire with classics of Angra (band that had Kiko in training between the 1990s and 2010) and Megadeth (Marty could be arrested if he does not execute the soil of “Tornado of souls”!!

Invited to spoil repertoire, Friedman, with his polished and English speech of great diction, deviates:

“I won’t reveal any secrets or surprise, but I will say something: we have already decided everything we are going to do. We have done the arrangements. I think everyone will be very surprised. Of course, the show is Kiko Loureiro – there is a part of the show where I will come in and we will take it to a different place. We had touched together before, only once on stage with Megadeth, but doesn’t count much when compared to what we are going to do. ”

In fact, Kiko and Marty played together twice, both in 2023. That’s when the American agreed to take the stage with his former ground-at the time with the Brazilian-at Budokan Hall, very renowned events in Japan, and at Wacken Open Air, festival in Germany.

Backstage information indicates that Loureiro was responsible for suggesting to the singer and guitarist Dave MustaineMegadeth leader and little -affected to reconciliations, to invite Friedman to play with him in Japanese territory. Marty reveals not knowing that, but reflects:

“It’s quite possible. I don’t know what happened to Dave invite me, he just sent me an email asking, ‘Have you ever touched Budokan?’. I said yes, he ordered another one to play with us? ‘And I said,’ Of course ‘when I was in Megadeth, there was nothing more than I wanted to play in Budokan. We had touched together. When I moved to Japan, I played there seven or eight times, but not playing with Megadeth there was one of those unresolved dreams. If Kiko had something to do with it, I’m even more grateful.

Relationship of Marty Friedman and Kiko Loureiro

Regardless of Megadeth, the relationship between Marty Friedman and Kiko Loureiro is the best. The American says that before the Brazilian joined Megadeth, he only found him casually once in Japan. After he joined the Thrash Metal group in 2015, the two began to talk a lot by email.

“When he came to Japan with Megadeth, we joined to drink or something. It happened several times. I felt that he was a very special, friendly, intelligent and fun person. We liked to talk to each other because we have similar experiences, but our musicality is incredibly different. And just felt we had something that many other musicians don’t have.”

What, specifically, would be “exclusive” by Friedman and Loureiro? He explains:

“We both have an ethnic footprint in our songs. We both share a long experience in a well -known band. We have our own projects and bands that have very dedicated fans. It’s unusual: we have things in common, but it’s not the same things. In a way, I can connect that when we talked, they weren’t silly and stupid but intelligent things.”

Friendship soon became partnership, as Kiko brought Marty to participate in Open Source (2020), your fourth solo album. The two recorded the music together “Imminent Threat”of great repercussion, because it represented the union of the then current guitarist of Megadeth and the most famous ex, responsible for the most popular records of the group. Years later, naturally, the idea came to the tour.

“When I touched his album, I was very impressed. In fact, we had never played together in the same environment before. So this trip to Brazil will be very interesting, because we will do many things together that were probably never done by anyone. We are trying to expand the limits of guitar. Living from a great album from previous decades. But I think, ‘Forget my old things.’

Rock in Rio 1991 memories

Long before becoming a consolidated artist, Marty Friedman made his debut in Brazil. 28 years old and not a year from Megadeth, the guitarist had to face the crowd of Rock in Rio 1991. On the same date, they played Guns n ‘Roses, Judas Priest, Queensrÿcheamong other weight names. It was the Rust in Peace (1990) tour, an album that would grow the popularity of Dave Mustaine’s group, at the time David Ellefson (low) and Nick Menza (battery), this one deceased.

Friedman recalls:

“Rock in Rio was sweeping, one of the biggest emotions of my whole career because of the amount of people and the energy they emanated. I feel energy even with 200 people in the audience, but that was a discharge of energy I had never felt before. It made it a lot of fun to play guitar because I didn’t use my own energy, but it just returns.”

For the guitarist, that show marked his “real entrance” to the band, which had existed since 1983 and had released three albums before his arrival.

“At the time I was just in the band a year ago. It was there that I felt: ‘Wow, we are on our way to doing amazing things.’ A big start to my trajectory in that band. It was also a big step for Megadeth. It opened many doors for us. I had never felt such a support from an audience before.”

Eat to brazil

With so many good things to say about Brazil, why didn’t Marty Friedman not include solo shows on this current visit to the country? Here, he performs with Kiko Loureiro, but from June 10, the American will play with his own band in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Costa Rica.

The answer is sincere – and, again, loaded with compliments:

“Brazil just didn’t work logistically. The dates didn’t work out. We wanted to do that much. And I felt terrible for not adding Brazil, but it was just lucky. I got a call from Kiko: ‘Want to tour Brazil with me?’ And I said, ‘It’s not sure. my career and personal life. Astor Piazzolla In Argentina, record a music video and a live album in Santiago, go to Peru for the second time. It’s something very special. ”
