Artist comments on the fact that he did not contracted HIV despite being related to some partners who had the virus
Ney Matogrosso He saw the horrors of AIDS closely. In the 1980s, the artist related to partners who were diagnosed with the syndrome; notably Cazuzaalso icon of Brazilian music, and the doctor MARCO DE MARIAwith whom he lived.
Both died in 1990, victims of the complications caused by the disease. Ney Matogrosso, in turn, never contracted the HIV virus.
In an interview of 2017 to Tv fame (via Wiplash), the former singer of Dry & Wet reflected on having unharmed from the AIDS epidemic. He even clarified the rumor that he would have been “studied” because of this.
Ney stated:
“No one studied me, this is wave and rumor. I really had contact with people who had the virus and I didn’t have it. But I have no explanation either and I don’t get soft. I won’t now believe I’m an immune person because I think I was lucky.”
The artist also spoke of his relationship with Cazuza. Both lived a brief but intense novel. They met in 1979, in Rio de Janeiroand dated for about three months.
When Cazuza AIDS was diagnosed, they were no longer together. Ney Matogrosso remembered with love with the former singer of Red baron:
“Cazuza was one of the loves of my life. Today, our relationship if he was alive would be friendship, as it was until the end of his life. Dating no longer existed, but love remained and remains to this day. Death does not erase these things from within us.”
Already Marco de Maria was the only partner with whom Ney Matogrosso lived together. Even after the end of the relationship, the artist took care of his ex-husband until the last days.

Ney Matogrosso’s relationships with Cazuza and Marco de Maria are portrayed in the movie Man with h. The biography released in 2025 is dedicated to the life and work of one of the greatest artists of Brazilian music.
Man with h premiered in Netflix On June 17 and soon reached the top of the list of the most watched movies on the streaming platform. In biography, Ney Matogrosso is played by the actor Jesuit Barbosa.
