Notorious vocalist for working with Raimundos decided to abandon conventional stages after the end of the Rodox, but now he is returning to them
Rodolfo Abrantes changed the focus of his career by ending in 2004 the Rodband that formed after the controversial departure from Raimundos. Converted to Protestantism at the turn of the century, the artist stopped performing shows in conventional spaces to perform only at religious events, and built a gospel music repertoire.
Only in 2024 did the singer and guitarist decided to return to the previous lines of live performance, with tours occupying concert halls. With his current excursion, “Microphony”, which debuted last year in São Paulo, the artist has a series of dates scheduled between October and December in cities such as Porto Alegre, Brasilia and Blumenau.
In an interview with Felipe Branco Cruz for Veja magazine, Abrantes admitted that he missed the most conventional stages. However, he made it clear that he did not abandon his musical career – he only directed efforts to different activities.
“During this time I only introduced myself during the services, because the music is also part of this environment. Although I didn’t play at concert hall, I launched a lot of songs and felt driven to come back. I still carry my way of composing, and the adrenaline I feel on stage is so great that my head takes about three hours to turn off.”
When invited to reflect whether religion took him out of the stage, Rodolfo pointed out the real reasons for dismissing more traditional live presentation formats. According to him, the trauma generated by the break with Raimundos and the end of the Rodox – a group that already brought religious themes in their lyrics – led to such a distance.
“My departure from Raimundos generated some trauma, not only for me, but for the band itself and the fans. I faced an environment of a certain animosity. Then I set up the Rodox, with religious music, and the band suffered a lot of rejection. So I decided to dedicate myself 100% to my ministry and that did not exclude the music, because I continued to compose and record. devote to religion because it built my faith. ”
Rodolfo Abrantes does not sings Raimundos songs
Anyone who goes to any of Rodolfo Abrantes shows should expect songs from his solo career and Rodox. No Raimundos, a band that made him nationally known in the 1990s.
In an interview from 2020 to the program The Night with Danilo Gentili (via Wiplash), Abrantes was quite sincere in revealing the reason. The subject was addressed after Roger Moreiravocalist and guitarist of the resident band of the program, RigorAsk why God would be against the group’s songs. The artist answered:
“It is not God who has something against the songs. Many people tend to think that a guy was from a nice band and went out because he got to church, but it’s much deeper. I had a life and I lived according to what I believed. I sang exactly what I lived. I put people names in the follies I lived, exposed a lot.
In converting religiously, Abrantes knew what he defined as the “truth”: Jesus Christ. This transformed him as a person, which also led to a change in his private soundtrack. In addition, the artist made it clear that even in Raimundos, he always sang what he lived. Therefore, today, it could not interpret songs like those of old.
“I refuse to sing something that I have not jor my heart. Including, I haven’t singing many songs I made since I entered the church. In some of them, I discovered theological errors that I learned ahead, or things I said absurd bullshit. And I found out that music has an incredible power to teach. So I left these songs. It was.
Still in the midst of the interview, Rodolfo Abrantes said he had a very tumultuous relationship with his past. In the last two decades, the singer has simply avoided any subject related to Raimundos. Today he recognizes that “no one is born to Christ with maturity.”
“The impression when it comes to someone less mature is that your past seems to be running after you, wanting to pull you. I ran from it and there is a time when you don’t have to run, but I spent 19 years of my life running. If someone spoke of my past, I ran. […] Today, I can look at my past and respect it. I don’t want to go back, but I look at my story and deal with respect and gratitude. ”
