The body of the sambista Arlindo Cruz He is veiled on the block of the Serrano Empire School on Saturday evening, 9, in Maudiira, Rio. The square of the Serrano Empire underwent preparations since the early afternoon. Arlindo Cruz died on Friday 8, at the bar d’Or Hospital, a tijuca bar, where he was hospitalized since May for complications of pneumonia. In 2017, Arrindo suffered a stroke and since then he has undergone long periods of hospitalization.

What is “Gurim”?

In “Gurim”, the family and friends drink and sing to frighten the pain and ensure themselves the quiet correspondence of the poet. Practice is an ancestral tradition of African culture, brought to Brazil by slaves.

Other samba names such as Bira President and Beth Carvalho also had “gurim” in their awakenings. In a statement that informs the funeral, Arrindo Cruz’s family also asked guests to wear clear clothes on their farewell, “as a symbol of light and joy that has spread throughout life”.
