The guitarist helped the Swedish band to create one of the most emblematic songs of the 80s, but decided to resign shortly after
In May 1986, the Europe launched The final CountdownYour most famous album. The flagship of the album was the success with the same name, the greatest that the Swedish band had and noticed for its introduction loaded with keyboards.
The group soon hit the stops of success and became an eighty phenomenon, including us United States. Five months later, however, the guitarist John Norum He resigned.
What brought the talented guitarist to leave the boat at the height of fame? In a recent interview with the site Guitar.comNorum explained his reasons.
According to him, everything was so great that it was no longer beautiful. The band came from two coherent albums – Europe (1983) e Wings of tomorrow (1984) – But this did not even come to the frenzy caused by The final Countdown. When the new job and the same name broke out, Norum could not bear the burden of fame.
Also, after all he was a guitarist. With the keyboards who earn more and more spotlight and the image that arrives first on the song, Norum preferred to jump out.
Explains:
“When you reach success so quickly, it happens so quickly and in reality you don’t know how it works, how business and everything works. Suddenly, it is as if I had to wake up and do interviews every day, from morning to night, and TV programs, take flights in advance and everything else. And the fact that the keyboards are taking us more and more, we become more like a pop band.”
The guitarist adds:
“I hated all that great chewing rubber image, Lycra pants and all that image of the 80s. Then some boys from the band were very convinced, they started to exaggerate with sex, drugs and rock and roll, drinking every day, always. I resigned myself.”
“Turn the depeche mode”
In another interview, Writer music in vinyl (via website Igor Miranda), Norum has made more criticism to the period:
“I asked the boys:” We are turning the Depeche mode? Today I like them a lot, but at the moment I hated. But all the other members liked and we had a lot of fun in the registration. In the end, my solo was fantastic. “
Europe and John Norum
Without John Norum – who soon started a solo career – the Europe recruited the guitarist Kee Marcello and launched Out of the world In 1988. The album was a certain success, guided by traces like “Superstitious”, “Open your heart”, “Let the Good Times Rock” AND “More than he puts at stake”But nothing compared to the predecessor.
The Swedish gang continued to active until 1992, when the activities ended. After a dating show in 1999, the final return took place in 2003, with John Norum resumed.
