Star Trek: Lower Decks It recently returned for a third season, and as is often the case with its episodes, the premiere was filled with references to previous work from the franchise. However, “Grounded” took the references to another level and gave some great nods to the film. First contactt. It also included the return of James Cromwell as Zefram Cochrane and a recreation of the “Magic Carpet Ride” scene. It was all executed so perfectly that fans might be surprised that showrunner Mike McMahan and others weren’t entirely sure they could use Cromwell or the song before working on the episode.

Mike McMahan was kind enough to speak to Gossipify for the premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 and answered a few questions about the season and what else is going on in his corner of the franchise. Knowing that the stories often unfold before the details could be ironed out, he was curious if he and the writers already knew they would bring James Cromwell back as an iconic character before working on the episode. McMahan shared the details behind the scenes, her love of him for First contactand the broader theme “on the ground”:

We have already done this. We are always at the forefront of these things … It happens every time we have a traditional actor and I say, “Well, if it doesn’t work, we’re in trouble.” And luckily it always worked! But we wanted to do something that really celebrated, you know, the Earth episodes. Those Star Trek “back to Earth” episodes. And so, you see that each scene touches something like this. From Mariner’s dad’s apartment to a vineyard, you go to Cisco and you love him, every little bit is like, ‘Hey, we love this kind of Star Trek episode. This is what we are doing today. And of course, First Contact is, if not one of the best, probably the best “Hey, Back to Earth” movie. Maybe you could say The Voyage Home takes it, but we really wanted to do something that honors First Contact. I love Jonathan Frakes, I love this movie.

Lot of star Trek fans love First contactespecially with all the time I travel the oncoming goodness inside her. lower covers he went through no time travel, but rather an elaborate adventure that brought together Boimler, Mariner, Rutherford and Tendi in an attempt to rehabilitate Captain Freeman. In the end, it was all in vain, but fans got to see Bozeman, Montana, and the attraction it became after the world made its first official contact with Vulcans.

Mike McMahan has not only been successful in bringing James Cromwell back to the franchise. He was also able to use a licensed song to recreate one of the famous scenes from the film. McMahan revealed to Gossipify that while getting Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride” for the episode might seem like the easiest thing between him and Cromwell, it wasn’t even guaranteed:

It wasn’t a sure thing, and it wasn’t something we could afford either! We don’t have a lot of budget to work on the Star Trek animated comedy. but there are a couple of them [of] Sometimes a season where we can make something like this work and it felt like it was worth it. We have a 60-person orchestra where our entire music budget goes to get this amazing sound for the show. But from time to time being able to use the First Contact or “Ride on the Magic Carpet” theme as a basis for what we are doing at the moment.

However, the money came and Star Trek: Lower Decks was able to effectively recreate a tribute to Zefram Cochrane’s career with Will Riker and Geordi LaForge (both will appear Star Trek: Picard Season 3 ). Other key ships from the film were also featured in the episode, reconfigured to serve as attractions for anyone wishing to visit the place.

Overall, the episode was a promising start for the third season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, which has a lot of fun stuff on the stretch. In addition to the rest of the season, the series will cross paths with the acclaimed program strange new worlds which will feature characters like Jack Quaid’s Boimler and Tawny Newsome’s Mariner in live action (something by Mike McMahan launched to arrive from picard Season 2 ). It’s a bright future for a series that made headlines at one point due to one of the hottest scenes in the franchise to date, and I hope things get better.
