Milton Nascimento and Clube da Esquina 2: A symbol of Brazilian music

In Clube da Esquina 2, Milton Nascimento tamed MPB and created one of the gems of national music

The mid-1970s were intense for Milton Nascimento. In two years, he released four albums – the ones already mentioned MinesIt is generationsin addition to Native Dancer (1975)partnership with the saxophonist Wayne Shorter, It is Milton (1976), with songs in English, in yet another attempt to reach an international audience.

The truth is Bituca I felt the fatigue of life on the road and the weight of being the voice of a
generation (something he never felt comfortable with). He needed to put the brakes on, and one of the ways was to revive the project Corner Club.

The truth is, the club was merely a concept – a gathering of friends in collective creations from songs written by milton with his lyricist partners, as well as tracks by other composers. But six years had passed since the first album and its founder was already circulating in other circles. That is, if the project continued, it would be with new partners and other rules.

To begin, milton went after the main partner of the undertaking. Distant in previous years, Lô Borges contributed, but this time less intensely: only two songs (the outstanding “Streets
of the City” and “Bread and Water”), plus some backing vocals and guitar from “Mary, Mary” – which, by the way, was composed by milton for the soundtrack of the eponymous ballet by Body Group.

Packed with memorable moments over eighty minutes (his longest work yet), Clube da Esquina 2shines precisely in the songs of other authors, such as “So much” (in beto
Guedes)“Passion and Faith(Tavinho Moura) It is “Canoa, Canoa” (Nelson Ângelo). “Mysteries” had the author’s own guitar, the singer Joyce, in addition to vocals from Free mouth. Already “Source” it’s from Flavio Venturini, of 14 Bis, former attendee of the recordings of Milton.

More distinguished members also joined the club. With Chico Buarquehe divided “Canción Por la Unidad Latinoamericana” (written by boy with Pablo Milanes). With Elis Reginasang “O
What Was Made Indeed (De Vera)”which evokes the theme of “Vera Cruz”with letters from Fernando Brant It is Marcio Borges, c.each one responsible for one half. AND “Amiga song” is a “partnership” with
Carlos Drummond de Andradeon what milton set to music, with permission, the writings of the legendary poet from Minas Gerais.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Brasill in 2011, he commented on his favorite aspect of club 2.

This was an album that, unlike the club 1, in which most of the musicians were from Minas, I decided to invite friends from different places. That’s how they got in Elis Reginamy biggest inspirationChico Buarque, Francis Hime,Pablo Milanes and the groups Free mouth It is Tacuabé.” Then he mentioned other names that should also be remembered, “such as John Donato, playing tromboneMauricio Einhorn,Jacques Morelembaum,Edson Maciel It is Cesar Camargo Mariano. In some songs, the choir was formed by Gonzaguinha, Olivia Hime It is Cristina Buarque. It was an album that brought together such an impressive group that even today I get emotional just remembering it”.

Although it is more tamed and less experimental than the first Club,Clube da Esquina 2 is one of the most consistent works of milton. More than that, it is a testament to his ability to gather talents worthy of his greatness, consolidating the aggregating facet for which he is respected until today. The corner where everyone meets is really the same Milton.
