The story behind the cover of Black Sabbath’s best album, ‘Heaven and Hell’

Yes, the story is good, but it might be weird to hear “H&H” pointed at the beginning of the play.

The 1980 album cover photo, first featuring singer Ronnie James Dio in place of Ozzy Osbourne, is from the photo above. It’s a Polaroid image of students dressed as angels taken in 1928 – nearly 100 years old today but just over half as old when the record was released (strange to think of these time-rulers, right? But back to the point.)

Artist Lynn Curlee used the photo to create the classic cover illustration. And I said it’s Black Sabbath’s best record and I correct myself: Black Sabbath have two distinct lives as the greatest heavy metal band of all time.

My mug and T-shirt with the Henry Rollins quote, “You can only trust yourself and the first six Black Sabbath albums” won’t let me lie.

The first six are truly unbeatable, only Black Sabbath with Dio are another band. Ironically, as good as the first one.

Ozzy sang over the riffs; God sang on chords. Technically God was better, but can you imagine the first eight Black Sabbath 1 records without Ozzy’s signature voice?

And can you imagine a collection of songs that surpasses ‘Neon Knights’, ‘Children of the Sea’, ‘Lady Evil’, ‘Heaven and Hell’, ‘Wishing Well’, ‘Die Young’, ‘Walk Away’ and ‘Lonely is the world”?

Ok, the album gives a slight, very slight skid in “Lonely is the World”, but the band had already done it with “Wicked World”, “Who are You?”, “The Writ”, which, by the way , they are much more talkative.

You see that I omit from the comparison the seventh and eighth albums always with Ozzy, “Technical Ecstasy” and “Never Say Die”, even if I consider the latter underestimated by fans and critics.

Anyway, I think you understand the point I wanted to make.

AND:

1. the cover of “Heaven and Hell” is cooler than the whole phase 1 of the group;

2. If I had to save one Sabbath record from the fire, it would be “Heaven and Hell” (original cover reproduced below).
