A deadly flood near the border of Nepal and China has triggered a wave of viral social media posts claiming the late Bulgarian mystic Baba Vanga predicted massive global disasters for 2026.
The catastrophic flooding struck districts in central Nepal on August 26. According to the World Health Organization, the United Nations agency responsible for international public health, the sudden surge of water was likely caused by an avalanche of ice and rocks in the upper reaches of the river.
Preliminary data suggests this avalanche created a temporary natural dam that subsequently burst. The resulting torrent destroyed homes, roads, bridges and energy infrastructure across the landlocked Himalayan nation.
Rescue services are still searching for the dead and missing as of August 30, following significant human losses. Local authorities have warned that rising water levels pose a continuous risk of further flooding for mountain communities.
Viral disaster predictions
Following the destruction in South Asia, claims began circulating online that the event validates a prophecy supposedly made by Baba Vanga. Born Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova, the blind clairvoyant and herbalist spent most of her life in the mountains of Bulgaria before her death in 1996.
She retains a dedicated following of believers who claim she foresaw numerous world events during her lifetime.
According to the Economic Times newspaper, the most alarming version of the current viral prediction states that natural disasters will devastate seven to eight percent of the surface of the Earth in 2026.
However, there is no reliable primary source to confirm the Bulgarian mystic ever made this specific forecast. Astrology, tarot reading, numerology, palmistry, clairvoyance and similar practices have no scientific basis and lack objective evidence of their effectiveness.
These practices are not recognized in academic circles and often serve an entertainment purpose. Experts advise against using them as reliable tools for making decisions or plans, suggesting people consult scientific professionals for matters related to health or psychology.
Retrospective prophecies
Internet users have attributed several other dramatic forecasts to Baba Vanga for the year 2026. These include the outbreak of a third world war, a severe global economic crisis and the growing dominance of artificial intelligence.
Online posts also claim she predicted the departure of Russian President Vladimir Putin from power, alongside human contact with extraterrestrials in November 2026.
There are no authentic documents or recordings to prove she spoke about any of these upcoming events. The name of the mystic frequently surfaces in the aftermath of major global news stories, with supporters retrospectively linking vague statements to specific tragedies.
Followers have previously credited her with predicting the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the death of Princess Diana, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the United Kingdom voting for Brexit.
In many of these cases, there is no record of the mystic making the claim before the event actually took place.
Meanwhile in Nepal, scientists point to a more grounded explanation for the recent destruction. Researchers link the growing risk of such high altitude disasters to global warming, which they say is destabilizing mountain slopes and glaciers across the region.
