The animated franchise "Avatar" is expanding with a new series called "Avatar: Seven Havens," set 225 years after the events of "The Legend of Korra," according to creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Sehaj Sethi in an interview with Polygon.
The show centers on a young girl named Pavi, who is considerably younger than previous protagonists Aang and Korra. She finds herself in the post-apocalyptic city of Ellora, where the entire population hates the Avatar. Pavi must uncover what caused the catastrophe and why people feel such hostility toward their new would-be savior.
DiMartino said the new project would offer an unusual take on a good-natured lead character thrust into a hostile world. He said they were interested in figuring out which kind of Avatar would best fit into such a setting, and ultimately chose Pavi, who is forced to hide and is younger than both Aang and Korra. He added that they saw it as an unusual choice to place a good-natured heroine into a world on the brink of collapse, populated by people who hate the Avatar.
A New Kind of City
The creators also said the metropolis of Ellora would look different from locations in earlier "Avatar" projects. The city sits among narrow canyons that shield its residents from tornadoes and sandstorms. Its name was inspired by an ancient temple complex in India, a reference to the real Ellora Caves. In the series, Ellora is also where the magic of different elements intersects.
"Avatar" began with "Avatar: The Last Airbender," created by DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, and continued with its sequel series "The Legend of Korra," both of which followed young Avatars tasked with keeping balance among four elemental nations.
Release Date
"Avatar: Seven Havens" premieres October 9 on the streaming service Paramount+. The first season will include 26 episodes. It is not yet known whether the series will be renewed for a second season.
