Nigella Lawson has admitted she felt worried about critiquing amateur contestants ahead of her debut as a judge on The Great British Bake Off on Channel 4.
The 66-year-old television cook joins veteran judge Paul Hollywood for the new series, which begins tonight at 8pm, as 12 home bakers enter the tent to compete for the title.
Speaking to the Radio Times, Lawson confessed that she considers herself a home cook rather than a polished professional baker. She admitted feeling concerned that her own technical skills might not meet the standard expected of a television judge.
"I was a bit worried because, well, you wouldn't mark me up for my polished finishes as a baker," Lawson said. "Generally speaking, I don't think of myself as a judge. I came to baking later in life and because of that it's something that intrigues and fascinates me."
She added that her journey into baking relied on practical experience rather than formal culinary training. "I've learnt by doing and I'm a home baker, not a professional," she said. "It's quite interesting because the contestants are home bakers, too, so I have sympathy for that."
Judging Amateur Bakers
Lawson has been a leading figure in British broadcasting and culinary publishing for more than two decades, authoring multiple best-selling cookbooks and hosting television series such as Simply Nigella. Born in London in 1960, she originally worked as a book reviewer and restaurant critic before launching her career as a food writer with her 1998 book How to Eat.
While Bake Off marks her first time judging amateur contestants in the iconic tent, it is not her first role on a televised cooking tournament. Lawson previously served as a judge evaluating professional chefs on MasterChef Australia.
Despite her extensive television background, Lawson acknowledged the scale of taking over a judging seat on one of Britain's most popular entertainment shows, describing the new role as a huge leap while adding that the experience had been lovely.
Lawson praised her co-judge Hollywood, calling him the backbone of Bake Off. Hollywood has served as a judge on the program since it first launched 16 years ago in 2010, initially appearing alongside Dame Mary Berry and later with Dame Prue Leith following the show's move to Channel 4 in 2017.
Hollywood noted that Lawson brings a unique perspective to the judging panel. "The thing is Mary was different to Prue, Prue was different to Nigella and Nigella is different to Mary," Hollywood said.
"They each bring their own character to it, and Nigella is a very warm person, especially to the bakers," he added. "More so than Mary was and I think more akin to Prue. There's a very nurturing nature to Nigella, which was quite strong this year. Whereas me, I suppose I'm the constant. So I remain in my position of being constructively critical."
New Format Changes
The 2026 series introduces several new elements to the competition format. The upcoming episodes will feature wearable bakes, a free-from week, and a signature challenge where contestants compete alongside a relative of their choice following requests from viewers.
Hollywood admitted he was initially skeptical about altering the established structure of the series. "I don't like change. I'm a traditionalist and I don't like changing the format at all," he said.
However, Hollywood said the family-focused challenge proved to be a success during filming. "But the audience choice of 'bake with a relative' was a fantastic idea," he said. "The interaction, how they allocated work to their partner, it gave us a chance to be nosey."
The Great British Bake Off returns tonight on Channel 4 at 8pm, with hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding returning to guide the contestants through the challenges.
