A shy American black bear named Nugget has won the Introvert of the Year award in Alaska for his talent at hiding from other bears.

Popular Science reported that the United States Forest Service, which oversees Tongass National Forest in southeastern Alaska, awarded the title to Nugget as part of its annual Anan Bear Awards series.

Unlike fellow bears that fight aggressively for prime fishing spots near waterfalls, the male bear prefers to stay in the shadows and watch the action from the side.

Watching from the rocks

Reserve staff noted that Nugget first arrived in the area only two years ago and quickly became a favourite among observers because of his modest physical size and unusual reddish coat, which naturally darkens towards the end of the season.

During his first season along the waterway, Nugget primarily scavenged leftover salmon caught by other animals. Over time, he gradually learned how to catch salmon on his own without relying on scraps.

Wildlife staff said the young bear is most frequently spotted tucked inside a rocky crevice near the lower waterfalls. From that sheltered vantage point, he quietly watches larger and more dominant bears without attempting to challenge them for rank in the feeding order.

Salmon runs and bear hierarchy

Anan Creek is an important salmon spawning stream located south of Wrangell in the Tongass National Forest, which spans roughly 17 million acres across Southeast Alaska. Each summer, thousands of pink salmon swim upstream to reproduce, creating an abundant food supply that draws one of the largest seasonal gatherings of black bears and brown bears in North America.

At crowded salmon streams, bears establish a rigid social hierarchy based on size, age, and strength. The largest and most aggressive bears take over the most productive fishing ledges near the waterfalls, forcing younger or timid animals to feed downstream or scavenge discarded carcasses to avoid violent clashes.

Although American black bears are classified as a single species, their coats vary widely across North America. Many individuals in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska sport reddish, blonde, or cinnamon fur rather than black coats, often changing shades as their coats weather and shed between summer and autumn.

The Anan Bear Awards

According to rangers, the story of Nugget demonstrates that the Anan Creek ecosystem is productive enough to feed even small, timid bears that do not push their way to the front of the fishing line.

The Anan Bear Awards are handed out each year to 39 bears identified around Anan Creek. Forestry officials organise the recognitions to engage the public and raise greater awareness of local wildlife conservation.

Tongass National Forest is overseen by the United States Forest Service, an agency of the federal Department of Agriculture. The vast protected area encompasses ancient temperate rainforests, glaciers, and thousands of islands that provide crucial habitat for coastal wildlife.

Encounters with wildlife

Wildlife officials encourage public interest in bears through educational programmes, though encounters with the large mammals can also happen unexpectedly outside wilderness reserves.

Earlier in Tennessee, newlyweds Fabiola and Austin Kasperek experienced an unexpected bear sighting during their outdoor wedding ceremony. The couple explained that roughly ten minutes after the nuptials began, Fabiola heard a guest gasp when a mother bear and two cubs wandered directly into the celebration.
