The director of ‘The Florida Project’ returns to the sewers of the American dream.
One of the things that has made Sean Baker a key figure in today’s cinema is the mix of wisdom, affection and light with which he starts from the personal – the intimacy of his characters, which never invades without reason – to talk about the present from the United States. Specific, He talks about his marginalized, for whom the American dream can only be that, a dream. And one of the strengths of his cinema is precisely his particular way of configuring those fantasies doomed to be frustrated. Baker recounts these escape attempts as luminous tales as lucid in their portrayal of an unjust world as they are emptied of gratuitous pity.
This time, it’s Mikey (Simon Rex), a broke porn actor who returns to the Texas town where he grew up, who wants to run away. His fantasy, which we never know if it materializes (when the dream appears, the colors become unreal), has to do with a new life with a young donut vendor. The dialogue between atrocious reality and fantasy –in this case romantic, but not idealized: the protagonist is full of faults– is once again the space from which Baker masterfully speaks of the America that others prefer to ignore.
