It could have been a western, swashbuckling adventure movie, or even an episode of Star Wars, because what ‘Haute couture’ delicately recounts is none other than the forging of the hero, in this case, the heroine. Sylvie Ohayon places the teacher and her disciple in today’s Paris, with its social integration conflicts, and substitutes special effects, action sequences and complex initiation tests for the hypnotic day-to-day in an exquisite sewing workshop, with its rites and superstitions in a very careful staging.
Fate unites, as in fables, the path of the protagonists. Esther, lonely, rebellious and insurmountable in her art, lives in the uneasiness of not having a follower in her work. But as soon as she sees Jade of hers, she recognizes in her the necessary virtues to be one. Jade, for her part, shows the inexperience and awkwardness of youth. Magnificent Nathalie Baye, with a sobriety that hides tenderness, and Lyna Khoudri, that meets all the expectations he created in ‘Papicha, dreams of freedom’ (Mounia Meddour, 2019).
