Luc Knowles makes his directorial debut with this film, which has become one of the surprises of the year.
Álex and Cata are two young people who live on the outskirts of Madrid. Their lives are weighed down by the feeling of being orphaned, by being uprooted and by a series of impositions that have forced them to mature before their time. Precariousness is also part of their daily life, and drugs and dreams, in particular, escape from that hostile environment. Luc Knowles’ feature debut is a relentless yet poetic generational portrait, as earthy as it is etherealhalfway between Andrea Arnold’s social cinema and Sean Baker’s anti-capitalist metaphors, where colors and textures do not hide the moral rottenness of the physical environment in which his characters live.
‘Dragonflies’ would not be the same without the tandem formed by Olivia Baglivi and Milena Smit, two actresses who manage to create magical ties between them when it comes to materializing friendship in its purest form. The two seek their place in the world, between the feeling of loss, death and absence; between a family past that imprisons them and decision making that makes it impossible to escape from that spider web that keeps them trapped. A crude and at the same time beautiful film about two beings of light who fight for their freedom.
For those who want to discover little jewels of indie spirit
The best: the chemistry between Olivia Baglivi and Milena Smit
The worst: that it goes unnoticed.
