Sultan of Brunei Strips All Titles From Daughter-in-Law

The Sultan of Brunei has stripped all royal titles from Princess Pengiran Raabi'atul Adawiyyah, the wife of Prince Abdul Malik, in an immediate decree broadcast on state television. Prince Abdul Malik is fourth in line to the throne. The monarch's decision has caused a sensation as a move without precedent in the modern history of the country's monarchy.

An official announcement from the palace stated that the revocation of all titles and honours was linked to actions deemed incompatible with her position as a member of the royal family. According to the text, her actions damaged the good name of the monarchy and showed a lack of respect toward His Majesty, Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, and the royal family.

The palace gave no further explanation beyond that statement. Local media outlets have also been unable to clarify what led to the decision.

Royal wedding background

Princess Pengiran Raabi'atul Adawiyyah officially joined the royal family in April 2015 when she married Prince Abdul Malik in a 10-day ceremony. The event ranked among the most luxurious royal celebrations in the world.

During the wedding, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah granted her the title of Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri, making her a princess and royal spouse within the dynasty. The sultan revoked the title more than 10 years later without sharing additional details about his motives.

Monarch's birthday and health

The decision comes while Brunei celebrates the 80th birthday of the sultan. The monarch has also been in the news in recent months regarding his health condition.

In January, the sultan underwent a successful total knee replacement operation on his right knee. The new decision concerning his son's wife adds another development to the closely watched events surrounding Brunei's royal family.
