The creative team behind Netflix thriller Susurran Tu Nombre, including stars Robert De Niro and Adam Scott alongside director James Ashcroft, have broken down the film's dramatic ending twists and ambiguous final scene.
The psychological horror mystery follows father Tom Kennedy and former detective Pete Kennedy as they search for a missing boy while confronting the sudden return of an infamous serial killer known as the Whispering Man.
While the film received a lukewarm reception from critics upon release, it has secured a more favorable response among audiences due to its secret-laden plot and an ending that leaves several major questions unresolved.
The project marks another major streaming release for lead actor Robert De Niro, who has recently embraced exclusive digital feature and series work with Netflix following his roles in the crime epic The Irishman and the drama series Zero Day. De Niro stars alongside Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan in the new thriller.
The story begins with the sudden disappearance of Jake, the young son of Tom Kennedy, played by Adam Scott. Desperate to find his child, Tom reaches out to his father Pete, portrayed by Robert De Niro, a retired police detective who originally tracked down and arrested the original Whispering Man, Frank Carter, played by Michael Keaton.
Because Frank Carter remains incarcerated, investigators realize the recent abductions are being carried out by a new culprit. Suspicion initially falls upon Norman Collins, a man deeply obsessed with Carter's previous crimes, but police soon uncover a far more sinister connection.
Investigators discover that Collins had actually collaborated with Carter and murdered a man named Dominic Barnett. Barnett's body is discovered hidden inside Tom's newly purchased home, concealed alongside the remains of Tony Smith, one of the original Whispering Man's earlier victims.
Reflecting on the discovery of the bodies in the house, De Niro questioned whether it was a mere coincidence that Jake had insisted on moving into that specific property. De Niro noted that the characters remain uncertain, explaining that Jake simply liked the house and wanted to live there, while Tom was left following the clues his son had unknowingly left behind.
Identity of the New Whispering Man
The climax of the film reveals that the new killer operating as the Whispering Man is Frank Carter Jr., played by Owen Teague, who is the son of the original serial killer. Driven by a desperate need for validation from a cold father who transformed himself into an urban legend, the younger Carter committed the copycat abductions to earn his father's affection.
Novel author Alex North, who wrote the original book upon which the film is based, explained that the young man was entirely motivated by a search for his father's approval. Director James Ashcroft added that while these psychological motivations allow the audience to understand the character on a human level, he ultimately remains a dangerous killer who must be stopped.
Frank Jr. kidnaps Jake and returns to the house, forcing Pete to make the ultimate sacrifice to save his grandson's life. Ashcroft noted that in order to resolve the investigation and complete his emotional journey with his son, Pete has to give up everything. The former detective suffers a fatal stab wound to the abdomen but manages to buy Jake enough time to escape safely.
Tom subsequently confronts Frank Jr. inside the home, resulting in the killer falling through a weakened portion of the attic floorboards.
Prison Climax and the Final Mystery
Despite Frank Jr.'s survival of the fall, the story takes a grim turn inside the prison where the original killer is held. Frank Carter meets his son during a prison visit and strangulates him to death using the exact same murder technique he used on his historical victims.
Commenting on the fatal prison reunion, Ashcroft stated that Frank Jr. somehow understood that chasing his father's approval and connection would inevitably lead to his own demise.
The film closes with one final unresolved riddle after Tom examines old family photographs and discovers that the young girl Jake had described as an imaginary friend was actually Tom's mother when she was a child.
Ashcroft declined to clarify whether the revelation represents a genuine ghost or a psychological delusion. The director explained that the scene was deliberately crafted to function equally well as a potential psychological psychosis or a potential supernatural intervention.
Leaving its core mystery open to viewer interpretation, Susurran Tu Nombre concludes with Tom and Jake moving forward to begin a new life together while honoring the memory of Pete.
